Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Will you build me a resistance soldering unit?

A. No.  It's much more rewarding to build your own and if something goes wrong you can fix it.

Q. Is your unit for sale?

A. Sorry but after investing so much time on it I couldn't let it go.  Besides it works too darn well to part with.

Q. I was looking at your resistance solderer  and I saw it has a wheatstone (full wave) bridge. Most of the circuits I've seen that have a triac-diac triggering circuit don't rectify the voltage going to the triac. Why did you incorperate in your circuit?

A. The bridge was incorporated into the design to make sure the triac was stable through out the entire voltage range, in this case 0 to 12 Vac .

Q.  The electrodes are gouging rods.  Where do you get them and what is the material spec?

A.  They are used for cutting metal with an arc welder.  I got mine from a local welding supply store.  I believe they are just a carbon rod encased with copper.

Q.  I can't find an ECG 6498 diac listed as D1 on schmatic 1 of the control circuit.  Are they still available?

A.  That was a typo (Thanks Ron).  It should be ECG 6408.  They cross to a NTE 6408 and can be found here.
