Transformer
As mentioned before, this system is built around the transformer.  This unit is a heavy duty power transformer built for industrial applications.  It was made by Edwards Transformer.  I thought it was fairly old but I found all the specifications here. It has a 115 VAC primary with a 24 VAC secondary winding rated for 250 VA.  The secondary winding is center tapped for 4, 8 and 12 VAC.  I am only using the 4 VAC secondary winding (rated for 40 VA).  I may use the 8 VAC if I find I need more heat.  The dimensions are 7 deep x 4 high x 4 wide and quite heavy.  One nice feature is since the transformer is designed for surface mount applications, all wiring is enclosed in an onboard junction box eliminating the need for a project case.
Specifications:

Manufacture:  Edwards Transformer
Model Number: 88-250
Primary:  115VAC   60Hz
Secondary:  4 24 VAC  250 VA
Foot Switch
The footswitch used is from an old sewing machine.  Its just a simple on-off switch.  I dont know the rating of the switch but the contacts are fairly large so Im confident that it will handle the load applied to it.  And since the switch will be on the primary side of the transformer, the current will not be too large.
Dimmer Switch
To control the "power", I got a normal household dimmer switch rated for 6oo watts. This will vary the voltage going to the primary windings of the transformer. One nice feature with it is when the knob is turned all the way counter clockwise it turns off making it a convenient main power switch.  This was the only part I bought new.
Tweezer Handpiece
To build the hand piece, I started with two, 4" lenghts of 1/2" dowel drilled lenght wise to accept 3/32" brass tubing.  The brass tubes were pressed fit into place and threaded at the back end for an electrical connector. I fashioned two tips out of some stainless steel rod I had and pressed them into the front ends of both brass tubes. The rod was actually and old CB antenna whip. The holes were drilled off center to allow for the "spring hinge"  The spring hinge is also a piece of the stainless steel rod bent in a U shape and super glued in both dowels.  Simple but effective.
