It's a rather sad fact but some awful things can happen and many need help. Fortunately there are people who care, and there are places for them to go and things they can do to to help.

As to the question of why we concentrate on cats so much, it's because they, like other domesticated pets, are the easiest targets, and so need as much help as they can get. Besides which, it's something we can do with the limited means we have. These are some of the various causes we support.

Cat Assocation of Topeka, Kansas (C.A.T.) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of abandoned and relinquished cats and kittens.
The simple fact is that spaying and neutering greatly increases the lifespan of your pet and increases quality of life as well! Show everyone you believe in spay/neuter!
According to U.S. News & World Report, there are 68 million owned cats in the United States, and 56 million owned dogs. If everyone who owned a pet took five minutes a year to support an animal welfare initiative, imagine the difference this would make. Please, take five minutes this year to add your voice.

The setting is a small business on the outskirts of town. Although it could have been  anywhere in America.  Feral cats have the lowest priority.  If you don't see them, they don't exist!  If you don't see it happen, it did not happen!
