Yon-Shaku Bo no Kata

(Four-Feet Pole Movements)

There are many weapons in the ninjutsu, most of them were developed as a result of their need for protection.  Some weapons were made out of daily basis tools but there were other weapons that evolved from another weapons.  One of these evolutional weapons was the Yon-Shaku Bo or "four-feet stick".  None of the Japanese war weapons were blunt, almost everyone of them had an edge (or more than one).  Some of the weapons used by the ashigaru (non-rank soldiers) were the yari and the naginata.  The yari was a five foot stick with a 10 inch long edged spear point, the naginata was a four feet pole with a two feet long edged blade.  Sometimes those weapons were broken while combat, in those cases, the soldier would get his sword (if they had) but as they were unarmed, they had to learn how to use that wooden pole as a weapon.  Therefore the Bojutsu was developed as a supplementary armed fighting style.

The bojutsu uses wooden weapons of almost any size.  The largest one is called Rokku-Shaku Bo (six-feet pole), the mid one is known as Yon-Shaku Bo (four-feet bo) and the small one is the Sho-Bo (short pole).  There are many other sizes of wooden weapon such as the Shin Bo and the "so called" Han-Bo but the most used are the first three of them.

When the bo is used by a well known fighter, it could be as efficient as the sword itself.  There are many moves derived from the normal body motion, but the pictures included in this page are the basic eight techniques.  These movements are basically the same for the Yon-Shaku Bo and the Rokku-Shaku Bo.
