History

The ninja concept is born near the 12th century, during Japan's Feudal Era.  Several theories exists about their origins but none of them can be proved out of doubt.  Nevertheless there is a theory which is the most accepted, so seat back and enjoy.

By the year 1180 there was a samurai named Kiso Yoshinaka who happen to have a low rank Samurai named Daisuke Nishina.  By those days they were involved in  war.  After his army was defeated, Daisuke fled to the mountains of Iga province.  There he met a warrior monk, Kain Doshi, who taught him a fighting style of the ways of nature called Shugendo.  After all he had lived, Daisuke felt that he was born again with the new achieved knowledge and changed his name to Daisuke Togakure in honor of the place where he learned to "live" again.

It is supposed that his successor in our martial tradition, Shima Kosanta Minamoto no Kanesada,  was a samurai too who fled with him and learned his "way of life".  Then as they designed new martial arts techniques,  tradition was also born... Togakure Ryu.

The purpose of this webpage is to inform as many people as possible about the Togakure Ryu.  More than a simple martial art school, it is a real "life form", a way of living in which everyone who learn its techniques, also learns how to appreciate the simplest things of life.

The concept of ninja was misunderstood since the arriving of the character to the "New World".  The surrounging legends of "mythological" characters were so attractive that were adopted almost instantly by Hollywood filmmakers.

But these movie  producers didn't knew  what ninja really means.  So they only showed in their productions their fantastic  fighting skills, leaving behind their really meaning.

There is where real practitioners of ninjutsu started to "educate" their students in our true philosophy and this is why I am publishing this page.

Tradition

Togakure Ryu literally means "School of Togakure" and that is what really is.  Here we try to teach the principles established by Daisuke of his "simple way of life".

Our martial traditions has a collection of nine fighting styles.  These styles were merged as time passed forging the powerful fighting style that actually is.  Each one of them has their own characteristics and uses, so the Togakure practitioner will have a well prepared arsenal in case he need it.

Our school also teaches the survival skills needed to overcome your opponent. The  Togakure Ryu has 18 training levels which are the core of the main style.  These levels make the "ninjutsu deshi" (student of ninjutsu) to develop gradually at a very personal pace until achieves his expertise degree in every one of them.

Inheritance

The ninja tradition was developed under secrecy, therefore most of its knowledge was inherited orally.  This kind of knowledge were taught from master to student until the student was well prepared and become a master himself/herself then the new master would teach others the art.  So, in order to synchronize the teachings, a "line of hierarchy" was developed and the most prepared person in the art would be called "soke" (grandmaster).  Here is a list of all "soke" in our tradition, our "Inheritance Line".

Fighting Styles

The Togakure Ryu has been taught in its traditional way since XII Century (1181).  Even when the world's weapons and dangers have change, the Togakure Ryu  still proves to be very useful as a defense, how can it be?  Easy... the fighting style has evolved.

Even when it still have its roots, the school has absorbed the teachings of other younger schools becoming a very powerful martial tradition.  Actually the Togakure Ryu has, as part of it, eight more martial schools which are:  Gyoko Ryu, Kuki Shinden Ryu, Shinden Fudo Ryu, Koto Ryu, Gikan Ryu, Takagi Yoshin Ryu, Kumogakure Ryu and Gyokushin Ryu.

For more information about these styles and its martial training and tradition, look for them in the navigation menu of click here to go to the related webpage.
