Ninjutsu Ryu

(Styles)

Introduction:

By the 16th century there were more than a hundred of ninja families in all Japan.  But the frequent civil wars that were fought around the country forced those families to merge their knowledge or disappear forever.  In the Togakure tradition are kept several ninja traditions as part of our own, as well as several other martial arts.

Togakure Ryu

Ninjutsu, "The school of the hidden door"

Founded in the 12th century by Daisuke Togakure, has 34 generations.  His special characteristics are the usage of the senban shuriken, shuko and shindake.

Gyoko Ryu

Koshijutsu, "The school of the diamond tiger"

Founded in the 12th century by Hakuunzai Towaza and has 28 generations.  The story tells that the style was an adaptation of a Chinese fighting style, learned by Hakuunzai from a couple of Chinese brothers.  Its specialty is the use of thumb to attack the pressure points.

Kuki Shinden Ryu

Happo-Ikenjutsu, "The school of the nine demons"

Founded in the 12th century by Izumo Kanja Yoshiteru and has 26 generations.  The specialty of this style are the attacs with heavy moves and pressure points.  The weapons used in Gyoko Ryu are Yon-Shaku Bo, Roku-Shaku Bo, Kusarigama and Bisento.

Shinden Fudo Ryu

Dakentaijutsu, "The school of the inmovable heart"

Founded in the 12th century by Izumo Kanja Yoshiteru and has 26 generations.  The specialty of this style is the boxing-like fighting style but also has techniques like Jutaijutsu, Dakentaijutsu, Hojojutsu and Iainuki.

Koto Ryu

Koppojutsu, "The school of the fallen tiger"

Founded by Sandayu Momochi in the 16th century, with 18 generations now.  Some of the characteristics techniques are the use of strong punches, heavy steps and tokiuchi.  It uses some unconventional weaponry like the metsubishi, and it is believed that is derived from the Chinese or Korean martial arts.

Gikan Ryu

Koppojutsu, "The school of the truth, loyalty and justice"

Founded on the 17th century by Sonyo Hangan Gikambo (also known as Takagi San) and has 15 generations.  The characteristically moves includes the use of special punches and kicks like the shuto.

Takagi Yoshin Ryu

Jutaijutsu,"The school of the tall tree and the rooted heart"

Founded in the 17th Century by Oriuemon Shugenobu Takagi. The style now has 17 generations and its specialty is the opponent control while lying in the floor.  It was developed for closed spaces and most of the techniques of Takagi Yoshin Ryu are finished by lying one or both knees in the floor.

Kumogakure Ryu

Ninjutsu, "The shcool hidden in the clouds"

Founded in the 16th Century by Heinaizemon Ienaga Iga, also known as Kumogakure Hoshi.  This style actually has 14 generations and can be recognized by the use of combinations of several blocks and attacks for each single strike from the opponent.  By its creation time, the practitioners of Kumogakure Ryu used to wear demon masks and armor in their arms and legs under their uniforms to give the illusion of invulnerability..  Their techniques seemed to be very similar to the ones of Togakure Ryu but they used to block their opponents sword attacks with their arms and legs.

Gyokushin Ryu

Ninjutsu, "The school of the immovable heart"

It seems to be created sometime around the 15th Century but there is no certain information about its creation date and creator of this style.  There are several theories about its creator.  Some historians think that Sasaki Goemon Teruyoshi and other ones think that it was Sasaki Orouemon Akiyaro, but no one really knows.  The techniques of Gyokushin Ryu are based in Tori's (defendant) sacrifice of balance, against Ude (attacker).  But the style is really specialized in strategy and war tactics.

The combination of these nine fighting schools makes up our style as what it is, a very complete and complex fighting system with a soul of its own.  Even when some of the war techniques are not currently used or taught (because of the weaponry change), the style keeps it essence and is taught as our ancestors did.   With these teaching methods our practitioners develop their "spirit" and strengthens their bodies to become the idealistic essence of the ninja.  These are the ways used by our instructors to guide us to the path of seeking self-perfection.

As we belong to a society, we have the ethical responsibility of preparing our students to collaborate with the environment that surrounds them.  With the inclusion of philosophical principles, as part of our curriculum, the students develops self confidence as well as respect for other people.  This principle is known, in ninjutsu, as nin or the principle of person or human being full of talent, a true man.  As you can see, we try to set ethical values as well as fighting knowledge in our students as an attempt to contribute to society while trying to seed the respect of every living creature, which is the secret of ninjutsu... our way of life.
