The teepee stands on a terrace that Owen designed. It's constructed of about 12 tons of clay fill supported by antique railroad ties. Each tie weighs about 150 lbs. and Owen hauled them to the woods and put them in place himself. Garry and he then hauled the tons of fill, one wheelbarrow at a time down the steep driveway. It was our personal version of building the pyramids, So here it is. Our teepee. The design and building of this teepee inspired  my book.
Cool nights by the teepee fire ... Spring 2007
I painted  the buffalo shield for the door by  recreating a picture from the instruction manual that came with our teepee. See  www.tipi.com - Nomadics Tipis. Check it out!
And it stood through the winter, too.
The 12-Foot Teepee is now available! Click here to go to the Amazon eStore for ordering information!

Looing into the woods from the back of the teepee ...

Owen built a small bridge that leads down the teepee path
One great season ... our woods are a glory to behold!
In my teepee ... by firelight.
We got really intimate with the tree-to-wood process. Owen cut down all the saplings to make the poles from our own woods. We didn't have pine, so we had to make do with hardwood (oak, maple, sassafrass) saplings. They just don't grow as straight as pine so our teepee is lumpy, like the people who built it. Above shows Owen peeling a pole using a draw knife. I actually peeled most of the poles ... my biggest contribution, other than nagging Owen to work on the teepee!
