WILLIE WILLIAMS INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT

The following is a transcript from an in-studio interview with controversial Miami recruit Willie Williams, which occurred on the Fox Sportsnet special 'COUNTDOWN TO SIGNING DAY...

CORY KESSLER: Welcome back to the show, its a special time for us here at Countdown to Signing Day because of who we welcome to the set live right now. His name is Willie Williams, and not only is he the most dominating player in the country, he is likely the most interesting interview in the country as well. He is comfortable on the field as well as comfortable in front of a microphone. Please join us in welcoming the best linebacker in the United States, Willie Williams to the set welcome to the show, how does it feel to be here Willie???

WILLIAMS: Hey, it feels great, its a great opportunity to come up here and actually be here live on the show, and I thank you for this. You know, its been a long process for me, and its over Im relieved.

KESSLER: Well, you thank us and we thank you as well. Its been, what an interesting recruiting process. Talk about why you chose the University of Miami

WILLIAMS: Tell me about it. It has been real interesting, you know, uh, I told the University of Miami, you know, because, I feel I can go out there and be an impact player and actually make plays on the field actually start playing right now, right here, Im ready to go work right on the field right now.

JAMIE NEWBERG: Now lets talk a little about Florida State. Obviously it was nick and tuck all the way, and I know you wrestled with the decision. A lot of people thought it was a slam dunk but it really wasnt.

WILLIAMS: Ah yeah, um. Basically, it came down to this decision right here this signing day decision when I was at my school we actually had to ask for five more minutes, you know, just to think it over, talk to family, talk to my players, talk to my friends, to actually see what I really wanted to do and I felt that you know where my heart was

NEWBERG: Now, I think one of the most interesting things about the recruiting process for you was the diaries that have come out over the past couple of weeks (laughter) that, who has the best food?? Florida State?? Miami?? Auburn?? Florida?? Lets talk about it.

KESSLER: We know you love lobster

WILLIAMS: Yeah, Ive have to give the plug to State. You know, their food was just amazing you know, they wined us and dined us with lobster, shrimp, strawberry dakari. You know, it was great, but you know they had some great food, but I have to give the plug to Florida State, they had the biggest steaks. (laughter)

NEWBERG: Lets talk about you as a player, obviously youve got all the skills, you led your team to the state championship, which I know is huge for you this year, lets talk about you as a player, what do you bring to the table what does Willie Williams do best out there???

WILLIAMS: I feel, Im going to say one thing, the only thing I do best out there is actually make plays cause havoc in the backfield, I feel Im going to play with the contain with the way of the game, Im going to be an impact player out there I feel that if you ask me what kind of linebacker I am Ill say a playmaker.

KESSLER: Well, we know youre not going to play like King Tut, because he was a long time ago. But, we have to refresh the viewers memory of that, you were at Florida State and you were saying that you felt that you were being treated like King Tut, they fed you lobster, they fed you Filet Mignon where do you get that comfort in front of the microphone??? Its nice to see, you know with a young man

WILLIAMS: Ah, you know I feel the pressure, but no fright light, everybody asks me if Im going to be scared to play in front of the big crowd and everything, I feel that basically it will just make me play better, actually make me motivate me to make these plays out there, so you know I just feel so comfortable right now, Its just, I guess its in the blood.

KESSLER: You fit in really well with us here on the set, how are you going to fit in, you know, at the University of Miami, where Ray Lewis was, and where do see yourself fitting in with the long line of stars that were playing defense for Miami???

WILLIAMS: Ah, actually I see myself fit in as hopefully in the future, me being another Ray Lewis, ah D.J Williams, ah just any other great linebacker who has came through Miami, hopefully, I got on this throwback (hes wearing #98), hopefully one day a kid will be wearing my throwback, when hes 17

NEWBERG: That is for Jerome Brown, obviously. Ah, lets talk about Miami, obviously so much of enormous pride, especially with the players that have worn that jersey before how many guys that have recruited you that you met as you gone through that whole process???

WILLIAMS: Ummm, you know, its like a family there. Ive noticed that, all of them stick together, even when they go the NFL they dont anyone sift to the bottom so um, basically I want to fit in with that pride, and I want to take when I go out on that field.

KESSLER: Willie, Im not sure if all the viewers know but you do call yourself, the Predator. Why do you call yourself the Predator, and what really gets you going when youre out there on the field.

WILLIAMS: Ah what really gets me going is when the crowd gets hyped. That makes me really want to make a play. I call myself the Predator, I feel that everyone on the other side of the ball on the offense, I feel like food to me because I love to eat. Theyre like food to me, and I feel I aint going to starve myself Ive got to go make the play, the ballcarrier is a big steak or a big lobster so I got to go eat him.

NEWBERG: Well I know you are going to have a big appetite when you get to Coral Gables, lets talk about your expectations next year as a true freshman, stepping at a place like Miami with all that talent, how do you see yourself next year at Miami and your expectations???

WILLIAMS: Ah, my expectations, I feel if I go in there and do what I got to do practice hard, Ive got to practice hard and everything and do what I have to do, I feel that actually I can be an impact player as a freshman you know, ah, Im not saying that Im going in to straight start and everything but I feel that if I go in there and do what I got to do I feel, hey you ought to see me on Monday night against Florida State.

KESSLER: Willie, what is your favorite thing to do out there on the field??? Is it to sack the quarterback, is it to hit a receiver, is it somebody coming across the middle, whats your favorite thing to do out there on the field???

WILLIAMS: Ah, like I told Brian Brohm (Louisville QB recruit) I rather sack the quarterback, we play in our second game, so hes going to see a lot of me this year (laughter)

KESSLER: Of course, Brian Brohm at Louisville, so thats Miamis second game of the season So look out Brian Brohm, right???

WILLIAMS: Oh yes, oh yes look out Brian.

KESSLER: All right, well look out for you right now, but weve have to test your hands right now, can you catch the ball???

WILLIAMS: Oh yes, oh yes, Ill play it like its an interception (autographed ball is thrown to Williams, who then proceeds to sign it)

NEWBERG: Now, obviously this was a difficult year for you at one point because you werent eligible this season you battled some injuries after you were declared eligible, tell us about the moment you were walking off the field as a state champion for Miami Carol City.

WILLIAMS: It just felt so good, I would like to thank God for that because at one point I was ineligible, I was an average high school kid, not even an athlete, and then for me to just actually win state, it was a remarkable feeling I cant even explain, you know it brought tears to my eyes, and basically I just like to thank God for that.

NEWBERG: You going to have that feeling once again at Miami my friend, because you guys are loaded again with that class youre bringing in.

WILLIAMS: Oh yeah, Oh yeah.

KESSLER: Willie, thanks for joining us. The guy they compare you to, Lawrence Taylor, his birthdate today so maybe thats a good omen for you

WILLIAMS: Hmmm
