2004 SENIOR BOWL GAME NOTES

RIVERS MAKES MEGA-MONEY IN JUST 30 MINUTES

ESPN's coverage of the game expanded to six commentators this year, with Mel Kiper Jr. banished to a sideline desk, where he occasionally chimed in along with participating in a live internet chat session. Before the game even starts, they measure the wingspan of Florida OL Max Starks (6'7" 359) which came in at 7'3". Darnell Dockett looks like a monster, especially with those tatts. Schottenheimer coaching in this game for the fourth time, no surprise since it's not like his pro teams are ever still alive around this time. Why is it the same ladies in those rediculously over-sized 19th century dresses every year?? Philip Rivers starts things out by throwing a pair of hitch passes while everyone debates his 'from the ear' throwing motion. Va Tech WR Ernest Wilford still looks a little like a DE. Rivers threw for 4,491 yards and a silly 72 percent completion percentage on the year. 13,484 yards in his career is second all-time. Salisbury is already calling him the QB most likely to start by Week 5 next year. Hawaii DE Travis LaBoy is hear wearing #00, just call him Hawaii OH - OH. Mels top-five QBs are coming up, I already know theyre going first round. Bowling Green's Josh Harris now in for the North under center for probably the first time in his life. They say Losman kept getting his brains out this year, typical life for a C-USA quarterback. South gets the ball back, Rivers just threw a Favre-like laser to Henderson. You know an All-Star game is serious when they dont trade decals. After getting a few first downs on his first drive, Rivers is really getting locked in. Purdue safety Stuart Schweigert is lightning fast, I used him at QB for Purdue in NCAA 2004 once. Rivers finds Cedric Cobbs (also fast) for a TD. Rivers does a nice job eluding rushers and stepping up in the pocket. No shows due to injury include Iowa safety Bog Sanders and Florida TE Ben Troupe. Personal sleeper Cody Pickett now in, hes big and faster than the rest of the QBs here. Dockett gets great penetration and recovers a fumble, his stock is going through the roof according to everyone who's been in Mobile this week. Rivers fires another strike for a TD, even Kiper is convinced, comparing him to Bernie Kosar. North is rotating QBs by the series, Navarre is in now got the gorilla off his back by finally beating Ohio St (killed me to see it). Alabama OLB Derrick Pope with a nice stick on Minnesota FB Thomas Tapeh, the best of a weak lot of fullbacks here. Jenkins darn near makes a spectacular catch, he and Navarre dont seem to be in sync. Typical Ohio St/Michigan, without sports this wouldnt be disgusting. Now Rivers is really getting sick, throws one 50-yards on a line and hits the guy in stride. Hes made himself a ton of money in the last 30 minutes. Marty needs to sit him down, weve seen enough. Florida St. bulldozer Greg Jones runs over Schweigert to make it 21-0. Someones waving a Southern Miss banner, like the school (except for their alums disabling vintage Favre pictures on their websites). Now theyre measuring Jones biceps 17 inches. Man. They show Jones at the weigh-ins, man is yoked. The 25th anniversary is coming up, does that me we get to see Everett throw the coffee table in Romes lap yet again come September (and now they can add Namath/Kolber to the collection). Rivers finishes the quarter 9-14 for 163 yards, he can shower and accept his MVP trophy already.

CB Keiwan Ratliff intercepted nine passes, supposedly runs a 4.4 (second round pick??). Navarre throws a nice TD pass to Colbert, fitting Navarre sure saw him catch enough against him this month. Michael Clayton has risen to #4 among receivers on Kipers board. Joey Thomas (Montana St) looking pretty aggressive out there. Losman showing a nice arm. Chris Perry ranked third, Quincy Morgan fifth among running backs - much higher than I've seen him on other boards. Perry pulled out of this game at the last minute on advise of his agent. Guess he could had fumbled a couple more times. UCLA DE Dave Ball with a nice backfield stuff sniffing out a reverse. Coclough is jumping routes, as I said three months ago everyone is going to find out about this small school stud. Scouts dont like Picketts velocity right now think he (and Roy Williams) are wishing they didnt come out last year. Iowa's Nick Kaeding slips on a 47-yard attempt on the final play of the half, but everyone was raving on him during workouts, could be a third round pick Theyre showing Rivers in the locker room take off the uniform, get on the interstate, NOW!!! Schaub now in the game, 65 244. Dwan Edwards (Oregon St.) with a sack. Travis LaBoy (Hawaii Oh Oh) was supposedly all over the place (as in undisciplined) in practice. Now Roethlisberger is in the ESPN chat room, that guy is campaigning harder than Howard Dean, he's out to get teammate Jacob Bell (o-tackle) some love. Just so he doesnt morph into Ric Flair. Utah State's Chris Cooley makes the top five list at tight end, that's a shocker. Pickett seems much better on the short routes. Dockett drags down the QB right off the snap!!! Jenkins now 6-64, on his way to North MVP honors. Notre Dame RB Julius Jones makes his first appearance and immediately knocks out a defender (Guss Scott) cold. Scott finally gets up, good news - but obviously concussed. Someone just reported that David Rivers is headed towards the locker room, GOOD IDEA!!! Kiper (on line) is reporting Picketts arm strength as questionable, and is raving on LSU's Chad Lavalais (anticipation, quickness, and upfield explosion) along with Jacob Bell (quick off the ball). Does Derrick Pope look more like a SS than L-backer??? Im liking Wilford the more I see him. Jenkins just took a huge belt on a punt return I will say this is not a grab-ass all-star game. WR Morant (Syracuse) looking kind of shaky. Just as I say that he gets a nice-gainer from Navarre. Rivers is back in, why??? Ah never mind, he finds Jenkins (Miss. St) on a great crossing pattern catch-and-run (30 yards). Rivers finds Watson on a 4th and 2. Jones just made a lot of money on one run, carrying half-a-dozen defenders on a 25-yard run. Jones then drags a few more defenders for the score to make it 28-10. Why do they bother with the extra points in this game, everyone just stands and watch. Losman takes a nasty shot to the knee on the games final play looks like hes OK though.
