2003 KAC RACING VORTEX - WEEK 10 (CALIFORNIA)

This week, the deck's stacked...

After a rare week off, the second quarter of the NASCAR season opens this Sunday in beautiful Fontana. Thought this would be a good time to issue a report card on all the drivers, from 0 to 99. Make sure you keep these away from your parents

#0 Jack Sprague D Many jumped on Jack after a 14th place in Daytona as a possible cheap driver to plug in salary cap games, but has not managed as much as a top-20 since.
#01 Jerry Nadeau C- Nice qualifying and a fourth place finish in Texas has gotten Nadeau some pub, but only ranks 33rd in points.
#1 Steve Park D+ Look for Silly Season rumors to heat up here soon, as Park is now deeply mired as third string at DEI, a change will probably be best for all parties.
#2 Rusty Wallace C- Rust is worried that the sports newer generation of fans will fail to realize that he is a 50-time winner and one time champion, kind of like how old Brooklyn Dodger and Milwaukee Brave fans are dying off.
#4 Mike Skinner F 40th in points, the over-under on Skinner getting the boot figures to be around the World 600.
#5 Terry LaBonte C+ Very solid the past three weeks with 16th, 5th, and 14th place showings, and is now 21st in the standings.
#6 Mark Martin C- 85 percent lap completion percent has put a serious crimp into his year thus far.
#7 Jimmy Spencer C+ Has cooled off the past three weeks after a solid stretch from Las Vegas to Bristol.
#8 Dale Earnhardt Jr. A Yes, Talladega was a gift. But Junior overcame a lot that day and has finished sixth or better in six of the last seven races.
#9 Bill Elliott D- 13th place finishes the past two weeks raises this grade from being a solid F.
#10 Johnny Benson D 32nd, 41st, and 32nd the past three weeks, another one whose career continues to go backwards.
#11 Brett Bodine D Fairly respectable finishes of 31st, 24th, and 31st in recent weeks for part-timer.
#12 Ryan Newman C- Back-to-back disasters drops Newman from 8th to 20th in points. Qualifying and win in Texas keeps grade from being even lower.
#14 Larry Foyt F His GPA is below zero.
#15 Michael Waltrip B A pair of top fives to go along with Daytona win. Other six finishes have fallen between 17th and 27th.
#16 Greg Biffle B- Could easily be in top 15 right now if not for missing the show in Vegas.
#17 Matt Kenseth A There are bars out there that give free drinks of Bud, Miller, or Coors when corresponding car leads an event. How bout some Smirnoff when Matt leads so we can really get blasted.
#18 Bobby LaBonte B+ Only one of four drivers to have four or more top fives.
#19 Jeremy Mayfield D How bad has he gotten??? He is square on the bubble for even making the field for JAYSKIs next Motor Madness.
#20 Tony Stewart B- Three straight finishes outside the top 20, and has finished no better than fifth in any race.
#21 Ricky Rudd C+ Getting collected early in Dega dropped him from 12th to 19th.
#22 Ward Burton C- Showing that last years 25th place finish was no fluke, hes 25th again. At least hes not finishing last in races.
#23 Kenny Wallace C+ Solid four-week span (10th, 23rd, 17th, 12th) has Kenny in the top 25.
#24 Jeff Gordon B+ Martinsville win puts him back squarely in contention.
#25 Joe Nemechek C Front Row Joe becomes Average Joe with an average start of 19th and average finish of 19th. Joe has taken Joe and made it Joe.
#29 Kevin Harvick B+ Running strong as anyone in recent weeks, and only one finish outside the top 25 all year.
#30 Jeff Green D To quote Simon from American Idol, I could go to any short track in America, on any Saturday Night, and see the same act
#31 Robby Gordon C Top tens have come at the plate tracks, has finished between 17th and 29th everywhere else.
#32 Ricky Craven B Tops in the Pontiac fleet with three top fives and especially dangerous at the old-school tracks (Martinsville, Darlington, Rockingham). Hell probably make Americas Most Wanted for getting into Junior.
#38 Elliott Sadler B Five out of his last eight in the top ten, look for a win very soon.
#40 Sterling Marlin C Three top fives in last four races gives just a hint of a possible rebound
#41 Casey Mears D And they thought Spencer was bad.
#42 Jamie McMurray D Not following up his success for pinch-hitting for Marlin, only 30th in points.
#43 John Andretti D- Another on the bubble for the next Motor Madness, best finish of the year is 14th.
#45 Kyle Petty D- Another Petty driver who needs to check his RPI.
#48 Jimmie Johnson B+ Has quietly stayed in the top five all year.
#49 Ken Schrader D+ Top ten in Martinsville gives his teams shoestring budget a boost, still only 35th in points.
#54 Todd Bodine D Another under-budgeted team, 11th place in Texas one of the few bright spots.
#74 Tony Raines D+ Bottom of the barrell as far as race teams are concerned. 39 year old rookie did have respectable finishes of 24th in Las Vegas and Atlanta, along with a 16th at Talladega.
#77 Dave Blaney C Has not been a factor since top tens in Rockingham/Atlanta/Darlington.
#88 Dale Jarrett C+ Only top tens came in the opening two races, including the Rockingham win.
#97 Kurt Busch B+ A win and three second place showings, but only a 90.5 lap completion percentage.
#99 Jeff Burton D+ How bad has this gotten??? Burtons only ticket to the Winston next month will either to be to win one of the next two races, or to advance through the Hooligan Race. Solid fourth place showing in Martinsville provides hope though.

That leads to the business of my top 20 rankings

1. (1) Kenseth, 2. (2)Dale Jr. (+1) 3. J.(3)J. Gordon (+2), 4. (5)Busch (-2), 5. (4)Johnson (+2), 6. (7) Stewart (-2), 7. (10) Sadler (+6), 8. (11) B. LaBonte (-2), 9. (6) Harvick (+9), 10. (14) R. Gordon (NR), 20. (17) Nemechek (NR)

Dropped out: Rudd (13th), Blaney (16th), Spencer (20th)

THREE ONES AND A FIVE

What Jayski (whose page is sponsored by Ford) will not tell you about the Final Four round of the Motor Madness tournament, that it is an all-Chevrolet affair. But it is a monster foursome involving perhaps the four hottest and most popular drivers in the sport. The regional final round was a beauty, with all eight drivers placing in the top 20. Here are the results

#1 Tony Stewart over #3 Dale Jarrett I liked Stewarts chances just because he was due for a good showing, and finishes sixth after being bumped around in the closing laps. Jarrett had a strong run as well, but got caught a lap down late and wound up 20th.

#1 Jeff Gordon over #3 Jimmie Johnson Gordon, along with Dale Jr. had the car to beat all day. Johnson hung around in contention as well, before fading to ninth while Gordon would wind up as the eventual race winner.

##1 Dale Jr. over #2 Rusty Wallace As was the case with JJ, Rusty contended all day and placed eighth, but like Johnson had the misfortune of going against a dominating driver, as Junior finishes third behind Gordon and Bobby LaBonte.

#5 Kevin Harvick over #2 Mark Martin Harvick was a contending car for much of the day but gets caught a lap down, and then has to hang on to finish just ahead of Martin, as the two finish 16th and 17th respectively.

Which leaves up with two match-ups that could go either way. Although I expect Chevys to fair well this weekend, all four had at least some degree of trouble last year.

#1 Tony Stewart v. #1 Jeff Gordon A pair of perennial championship contenders hooking up here. Gordon finished 16th in this race last year while Stewart cut down a tire and placed 29th. PICK: Gordon

#1 Dale Jr. v. #5 Kevin Harvick As fate would have it, the two crashed out together in the latter stages last year., and were already both down laps at that point. Expect the two to be battling each other on the lead lap this time around. PICK: Junior

Ryan Newman of course started near the front, and talked pre-race about how he should be able to handle the brakes at Martinsville much better this year. However, Newman was doomed soon after the start as his spotter noticed that the rotors were the brightest on the track. The culprit as it turns out was a brand of breaks normally seen around Formula One, as opposed to the Raybestos/Brembo brakes used by most teams. Newman was finished 64 laps from the end.

I told you two weeks ago that there had been some friction on the car radio between Dale Jarrett and his crew chief/spotter. Sure enough no sooner that went to press and Brad Parrott was released from crew chief duties, while brother Todd Parrott also taking an indefinite leave of absence from the organization. Robin Pemberton (formerly with Rusty Wallace) and Jimmy Makar (whom Jarrett worked with at Gibbs racing) are mentioned as possible replacements.

For those of you playing Checkered Flag Challenge, your 250K pinch-hitter may be coming in a couple weeks as Jason Keller is being bandied as a possible Steve Park replacement perhaps as early as the Coke 600. One potential rumor has Kurt Busch moving to the #1 in 2004. I do not see that happening, especially with Busch reportedly inked up with Rosch through 2006 which is an eternity in this business.

And of course it would not be the Coke 600 without talking about drivers attempting to moonlight in the Indy 500. This time around it looks like all three of the usual suspects will be taking part. Robby Gordon was the lone Indy 500 driver last year and looks to do so again. John Andretti did not participate last year but would like to do so this time around since Michael Andretti retires after this year.

And then there is Tony Stewart. Some driver broke his back in a motorcycle accident, and Stewart is being recruited as a replacement. Stewart would vehemently deny the report, then another report would come out saying Stewart has accepted and will be testing at the Brickyard this week. The latest has Stewart telling an Indy newspaper "When I'm ready to say something, we'll send out a press release." Kind of sounds like a go to me.

In 2001 Stewart went sixth at Indy before following up with a third in Charlotte. We wont mention that he spun in the first lap of the nightcap. Robby Gordon also had a respectable 16th place run in Charlotte last year. However Im not a big fan of the Indy-Charlotte double. Although the Indy race is much safer than a decade ago, there is still enough Stan Fox-like scenarios that could land a driver at Methodist instead of heading down to Charlotte. Gordon suffered burns in the Indy race once that would hamper the rest of his Cup season. And then there is the matter of weather delays, which Stewart had to deal with at Indy two years ago. And then theres the matter of actually winning the race. Of course thats remote with Helio and the rest of the Penske guys dominating like Kenyans at the Boston Marathon. But if Robby or Stewart were to win, it is very possible that they just might not make the second leg at that point. Hey, I just won the Indy 500, whats my Cup team going to do, fire me??? Drivers moonlighting at Indy are a huge headache from a fantasy perspective.

For those of you who want more short tracks, it looks like someone in New Jersey is listening who has plans for a .92 mile track on the board. The facility could be expanded to 144,000 seats. With Pocono as the only existing venue within shouting distance to NYC, NASCAR would probably find a date to squeeze for such a locale.

And then there is the TRAC circuit, a possible competitor (although they will deny it at every turn) to NASCAR perhaps as soon as next year. TRAC has signed a deal with ESPN to carry their races, which is a good deal there. Even though FOX/NBC/TNT has done a commendable job, NASCAR should had kept some ties to the network that had covered the sport when its popularity was far from what it is today.

TRACs downfall will be that instead of an individual winner in each race, there will be a team winner. There will be 24 cars in the circuit, consisting of six four-car teams located in American cities with motorsports venues in the area. So instead of Racer X v. Driver A, it will be the Colorado Clash, the Texas Tornados, and the Chicago Breeze. Races will be held at the Speedway Motorsports tracks (Texas, Bristol, Atlanta, Las Vegas, etc.), giving those venues an additional two dates a year. Cars to be used include Chevy Corvettes, Dodge Vipers, and Ford Mustangs. In early tests these cars run significantly slower than their NASCAR counterparts.

I see the idea, and no doubt it is modeled after Formula 1 which has 12 two-car teams, with the manufacturers title carrying near the weight of the drivers title. But are you expecting a victory party at Bristol Motor Speedway after the Bristol Stompers win the league championship??? Or perhaps it is the team apparel that is supposed to take off. NASCAR is in effect already a team sport with 43 teams. The only difference between that and the ball and stick sports is that the teams represent sponsors and racing organizations, as opposed to that of a city or geographic region.

In the end all I think TRAC is going to be is teams trying to block each other out like Tour De France Bikers trying to open up a lane for Lance Armstrong. Think Ill stick to racing rather than a rollerball-like event.

CALIFORNIA PREVIEW

Six of the top nine finishers last year were Fords. Although Jimmie Johnson ultimately won the race, it was Kurt Busch who dominated most of the event. Bill Elliott also placed fourth while Michael Waltrip placed tenth. In 2001 Rusty Wallace won, followed by Jeff Gordon, Dale Jr., and Tony Stewart. Rusty also placed eighth last year. The best recent track record over the past three years belongs to Ricky Rudd, who has placed fourth, sixth, and third. That could bode well for Rudd, but more likely should mean a huge day for Elliott Sadler who looks ready to win real soon. Look for yet another pole out of Ryan Newman, and perhaps even a good run to go along with it. Potential darkhorses include Dave Blaney (9th last year), Jeff Green (11th), Robby Gordon (12th), and Greg Biffle (13th in Cup debut). Sounds like a huge RCR and ROSCH day upcoming.

Rumsfeld just sent me a deck of cards to picture this weeks contenders. So instead of ranking 30 drivers, I will now have to rank 54. That is a small problem with only 45 drivers entered. That's OK, I can easily find nine Winston West/Goody's Dash Series drivers with a better chance to win that Hideo Fukuyama, so here we go...
