This could become a mute point after the University of Hawaii gets through with them this coming Saturday, but the whining coming out of Brigham Young University is getting way out of line. BYU (and its fans) are acting like a bunch of whiny jilted brides over the Bowl Championship Series decision to not give Y one of the two at-large berths for one of the four BCS games to be played over New Years. BYUs athletic department is so upset by this alleged snub that they are considering unleashing all jihad, including suing the BCS.
First off, lets not include the word snub in this. A snub would be if LSU were to beat Tennessee in the SEC title game resulting in Nebraska getting the right to play #1 Miami in the Rose Bowl over Colorado the team that drilled the Blackshirts 62-36 just two weeks ago. That would be a snub, that would be an injustice. That would be a major flaw in the BCS system. BYUs so-called travesty is not. Put yourself in the BCSs shoes for just a moment. You have the choice of inviting 2 of 3 at-large teams to your party-- #4 Nebraska, #6 Florida, or #12 (BCS ranking) BYU. Who gets voted off the island, who is the weakest link, who are the two perennial football powers, and who gets exposed as the team playing in a backwater conference who has been loading up on cupcakes all year??? The deliberation on that one takes about two seconds.

Even with Staley, Y does not have a broken leg to stand on... |
Again, this is not an injustice. If someone like Loyola-Marymount were to go 29-1 in college hoops this year, I guarantee they wouldn't be getting the #1 (or even close to) seed in the West Regional. BYU is a nice team, in fact an enjoyable team to watch, and Gary Crowton does deserve some major Coach of the Year consideration. But that still doesn't hide the fact that they are in a backwater conference who this year played one of the easiest schedules in college pig. Fresno St. would had faced a similar problem had they run the table - and at least they beat the likes of Oregon St. and Colorado early on. Here's some advice for the AD, you want to go to a major bowl, pound the pavement and get into the PAC-10. Nobody's writing articles on whether Illinois or Maryland deserve to be in the BCS, they won their respective conferences and they're in - with zero controversy. If you want to be big boy, then play with the big boys.
