2004 KAC BASEBALL BLUE SHEET - WEEK 6

ALL-STAR CAST IMPLODES LIKE IT'S THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW

You prayed for this day not to happen.

In fact you pleaded, begged, and bargained for it not to happen. The needle starts to go haywire on the seismograph at CalTech, as geologists nervously watch. Confirming their worst fears, the red phone rings.

GEOLOGIST: 'Hello...'

VOICE ON OTHER LINE: 'It happened...'

TOMORROW
WONDER WHY HERGES, MANTEI, AND RHODES OWNERS GET THAT FEELING THAT THEY'RE ABOUT TO BE SWEPT UP???
At this point the worst is feared. Did the Space Needle collapse??? Did a tsunami prove too much for the leaky roof at Miller Park??? Did the Jet Stream go on deck, blowing away the toilet bowl cover known as Olympic Stadium, forcing the Expos either to play all their games in San Juan, or to return to playing in biting 38-degree weather??? Did the flagpole in Houston topple, ensuring that all 450+ -foot blasts to dead center will indeed be home runs??? Are the winds blowing so strong that every pop fly at Wrigley ends up landing over the bleachers??? Did right field in SBC Park fall into the drink, making it a mere 238 feet down the right field line to McCovey Cove, ensuring that Barry Bonds gets intentionally walked every time up until age 70??? Or worse yet, will a promo for the next made for TV catastrophe mini-series appear on the bases and on-deck circles at a park near you??? No, it is more devastating than even that.

OTHER LINE: 'They just brought in Mantei to pitch the ninth.

GEOLOGIST: 'So whats the big deal???'

OTHER LINE: 'He just (expletive deleted) Brandon Webb out of a win.'

Ah, yes. Opposite field 2-iron shots making a dent out of a warehouse. Second-deck, third deck, home runs off rock formations, video boards, train tracks, Viagra ads, you name it, no landmark is safe. The disaster comes complete with an All-Star cast including Jose Contreras, David Riske, Matt Herges, Arthur Rhodes, Billy Koch, Kyle Farnsworth, Damian Moss, and the entire Colorado Rockies staff. But just as in any Irwin Allen camp classic, there are other characters out there whose mission is to the save the world, with that in mind we bring you the following

Jose Valverde Was ripped by some for a wild outing in Colorado early in the season, but events that occur in Coors Field (not unlike Area 51) really do not exist, its another dimension, just like Mark DeRosas four-error game never happened. Lets look at the real facts with JV. First he goes 64 two-fity-four. Thats not bad. Now lets dissect the stats, opponents hit all of .137 last year off Valverde, throw out the Colorado experience and the league is hitting .130 off him. By comparison, opponents hit .133 off Eric Gagne last year. The downside with JV is the control, he walks about one batter every two innings, but that seems to be the only way hitters get on base off him. The original plan was for Matt Mantei to close so they could get some trade value off him, but that is out the window now that Mantei has gone the Billy Koch route. If you havent gotten Valverde off the waiver wire, its too late especially after he struck out the side in his first save opp. However, he will be a nice buy in CDM (950), and the sooner you can get him the better. Look for Valverde to be the best closer this side of Gagne from here on out.

Ben Sheets Like Adrian Beltre on the hitting side, you just have to be patient on some of the younger phenoms. The 2000 Olympic hero is still only 25. If the 3.25 ERA/.97 ratio doesnt impress you this will, 34 Ks and just three walks in his first 36 innings pitched. That is Greg Maddux-like stuff. A balky back that tends to act up while Sheets bats is a drawback, and dont be surprised to see a trade to an AL team somewhere down the road if the Brewers can get another Richie Sexson-sweetheart like deal.

Roger Clemens There always seems to be someone in the movies who is literally dragged out of retirement to solve just one more case. Clemens has stormed to win his first six games (no other pitcher has won even five) along with a sub-two ERA, down from 4.35 and 3.91 in his last two years in New York. So he gets a few extra perks like getting to skip road trips if its not his turn, so what. Dont think he can quite keep on this pace but serious Cy Young contention not out of the question.

Javier Vazquez Its safe to say he has seen the last time he will be checked by security at the Stadium for the foreseeable future. Best control man this year besides Sheets, walking only six in 35.1 innings. 2.55 ERA and a sparkling .82 ratio, and thats with a shaky outing in Beantown thrown in which will be forgiven. As I suspected, he has exploded now that hes escaped Montreal.

Randy Johnson Another win for the over-40 crowd, with 51 Ks in 40.2 innings. As long as the knee is fine the Unit is as good as ever.

AND NOW FOR THE HITTERS

But there are others who believe the Day After Tomorrow cant come a moment too soon. John Hunts All-Roto team for April came out in this weeks Sports Weekly. Barry Bonds was deemed the most valuable batter of April, being worth $64. Other top hitters included perennial rent-a-player Reggie Sanders ($52), Carlos Beltran ($52), Marcus Giles ($48), Scott Rolen ($47), Manny Ramirez ($45), Michael Young ($43), and Adam Dunn ($39). Members of the all-bust team included catcher Ramon Castro ($9), Morgan Ensberg ($10), Austin Kearns ($10) and Vernon Wells ($8).

Brewer first baseman Lyle Overbay has been cast as a Sean Casey/Mark Grace-type first baseman, which doesnt sound attractive since that usually means not a lot of power #s at a position that demands it. Well, Overbay is hitting .317 in his first 27 games with 3 HR and 25 RBI. Meanwhile Hee Seop Choi sits at .268 with 9 HR/18 RBI. Not a bad combo whose CDM salaries go for 400 each.

And then there are the backups. Filling in for Torii Hunter, Minnesotas Lew Ford took off, hitting a hefty .380 with 3 HR, 18 RBI. Ford once hit four homers in a AA games and stole 52 bases in low-A ball back in 2000. Hunter has returned and is obviously still the starter in center, but look for Ford to see regular time at any of the three outfield positions as well as DH.

Ive also been telling you about Keith Ginter since Spring Training, who has five HR in 55 ABs playing a utility role in Milwaukee. Junior Spivey has been resting a sore hammy this week, but I like Ginters chances of getting regular work even when Spivey returns since third baseman Wes Helms is doing a great Jose Hernandez impersonation. I look for Helms to become the utility man, filling in at first and third.

TOP CDM ADDS/DROPS

There were three no-brainers for the drop category this week, who to replace them with was a bit trickier. Look for Valverde to be the top add next week, especially with the problems some of the other cheap closers are having. Also look for Texas Michael Young (.377, 22 RBI) to inject some action into the second base field, especially if Marcus Giles is out long. Outfielder Laynce Nix (.348/5/14) is another possibility with a 400 salary. Richie Sexson will probably be among the top drops, Sexson hopes to return in two weeks but has also been diagnosed with a torn labrum, meaning he will probably be at less than 100 percent for the rest of this year.

ADDS (FAs in bold)

  1. Vinny Castilla 3B-COL (523) Obviously a popular FA this week, but there is so much else out there at the position (Beltre, Glaus).
  2. Carlos Zambrano SP-CHC (284) Shutting out the Cards while recording 12 Ks in seven innings got him some extra action on Sunday Night.
  3. Matt Herges RP-SF (197) Count me in this group, and was kicking myself by Monday morning after getting the news that Valverde was the new D-Back closer.
  4. Johnny Estrada C-ATL (153) Cheap catchers are in demand, and I cant argue with 20 RBI in 23 games. However I like Vic Martinez just a tad better.
  5. Curt Schilling SP-BOS (142) Didnt know that there were 142 that didnt have him already obviously jumping on board for his two-start week.
  6. Joe Nathan RP-MN (140) Has been solid the last few weeks, but another reliever whos not far away from being on shaky ground. Juan Rincon is among those lurking.
  7. Scott Podsednik OF-MIL (132) And no doubt not happy with his 0-9 start for the week.
  8. Josh Beckett SP-FL (128) Jumping on board for his two home starts.
  9. Miguel Cabrera OF-FL (125) But slumping and was given a day off this week.
  10. Hee Seop Choi 1B-FL (123) Boy were those Marlins popular this week, the CDM action alone might double their fan base.

DROPS

  1. David Riske RP-CLE (436) Removed from closers role, still giving up big bombs.
  2. Austin Kearns OF-CIN (344) Hopes to return in 2-3 weeks.
  3. Morgan Ensberg 3B-HOU (315) Right handed platoon players never a good thing.
  4. Vernon Wells OF-TOR (140) First signs of life this year with a 2 HR, 5 RBI game this week.
  5. Ramon Castro C-FL (106) Guess the Marlin love is not universal.
  6. Matt Mantei RP-AZ (101) Removed from closers role, still getting roughed up.
  7. Aubrey Huff OF-TB (89) This years Pat Burrell?? BA down to .189
  8. Nick Johnson 1B-MTL (88) Been on the DL with a bum back since Opening Day.
  9. Juan Gonzalez OF-KC (83) The good news is hes been healthy, the bad news is at 3 HR/11 RBI you wouldnt know the difference.
  10. Matt LeCroy C-MN (74) One who may lose time to Lew Ford when he does return.

CDM FREE AGENT LIST (RECOMMENDED PURCHASES IN BOLD):

C A.J Pierzynski (860) Making a serious run at Robert Ficks throne as the most hated man in baseball.
1B Kevim Millar (1060) David Ortiz is the Boston first baseman you want.
2B Marcus Giles (990) Sustained a bruised elbow this week but should be good to go, definitely get if you dont have him already.
3B Aramis Ramirez (1180)
Figures to get a lot of play, but keep in mind that 14 of his 22 RBI came in a 6-game stretch.
SS Bobby Crosby (450) Hitting under .200, go with Cintron or Khahil Greene at this price range instead.
OF Vernon Wells (1150) Despite the big game this way, I would look elsewhere if hes not already on your roster.
OF Dave Roberts (680) His cranky hamstring acted up this week, still rivals Carl Crawford as the best basestealer.
SP Javier Vazquez (1280) Home start v. Anaheim this week, two road starts in Week 7.
SP Jason Marquis (510)
Regardless of price, I recommend pitchers who walk on water Marquis falls short in that department.
RP Francisco Cordero (1010) 10 saves for the first place Rangers.
