After Harry died in February, I wanted to get a cagemate for Bleys. While I was at Mary's house (Cavy Companions Rescue) I fell in love with a little TSW, texel girl named Willow. We decided to bring Bleys over to see if he and Willow would get along. The day before the introduction, Mary called to ask if I had checked with the local Humane Society to see if they had any pigs. I hadn't and when I did, lo and behold they had an adorable, young, golden agouti boy. This was Ned. Mary offered to "exchange" him for Willow if she and Bleys got along. Well, let's just say that I was in love within minutes and couldn't let him go. So after visiting with Mary, we brought both Ned and Willow home. Willow is a former show pig. She has a metal tag in her ear (looks like an earring) that marks her as such. Being a texel, she has long curly hair. It cascades down her body in all sorts of ringlets. She is such a beautiful girl. I really can't figure out why anyone would want to give her up, but I guess she just wasn't up to show quality. With such long hair, she needs a lot of brushing. When I adopted her, she was somewhat of a special needs pig (ie needs work). She was extremely skitish, frightened, and did not trust people. She didn't like being brushed and would squeal like I was killing her whenever I would try. Then she would TOTALLY freak out if I even came near her bum. I'm thinking that she was not groomed in a gentle way and that turned her into a bit of a neurotic mess, which meant she would be unshowable. Since she's been with me, she has made TONS of improvement. She now lets me give her gentle skritches, will take food from my hand, and even lets me gently brush her. I did give her a serious hair cut, which seemed to help a lot. I think all that hair was just a bit too much for her to handle. She and Bleys are definitely in love. They prefer to be together and I often find them sleeping near each other. Bleys is a perfect gentleman and lets Willow have first dibs on veggies and the coveted "potty box". |
