Oh sure, there maybe computer lockups but never (in theory) a rainout. During the tour, Woollum plans to play 30 games over a three day period, with a Thursday night triple-header against Ypslanti, Grand Portage and Corsica and a Saturday night tripleheader versus Austin, Cuba and Thief River Falls. Basler pointed to games against divisional rivals Austin and Grand Portage as the most important of the trip, but told reporters that: "We gotta play it one day at a time." Known for his charismatic pre-game speaches, Basler told the media: "I tell my players this is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Basler went on: "Players today think too much. After Jermaine Dye tried to tell me why he thought he struck out so much, I told him: 'You just got lesson number one. Don't think, it can only hurt the ball club.'" Basler said he hopes to set a classy tone for the Mammoth organziation. "The other day, I saw that John Halama had fungus on his shower shoes. His shower shoes had fungus on them. I told him, 'We'll never make the Summer League playoffs with fungus on your shower shoes. Think classy, you'll be classy. If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back and the press'll think you're colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you are a slob.'" Speaking of "the show," Basler also shared with reporters his memories of playing fall baseball his freshman year at Trinity College. "Yeah, I was in the show. I was in the show for 21 days once -- the 21 greatest days of my life. You know, you never handle your luggage in the show, somebody else carries your bags. It was great. You hit white balls for batting practice, the ballparks are like cathedrals, the hotels all have room service, and the women all have long legs and brains." In the closing moments of the press conference, Basler told an amusing story about fellow Summer League manager Greg Nims. "So there I was visiting Greg in Colorado, and he walks out of his bedroom wearing a garter belt over his boxers. Not only that, but he had the darn thing on backwards. I told him, 'The rose goes in the front, big guy.'" posted by Dave Basler 3/3/00
