In October 2002, Annie's vet had advised me against any exercise for Annie, except swimming. He had diagnosed Annie with long bone disease. Annie immediately trusted Kendall and took to water as only a retriever could. I had always thought Annie was clumsy and uncoordinated but, in the water, she has the grace of a ballerina. Swimming increasedAnnie's endurance and her muscle mass. She loved swimming. During this period of imposed idleness, swimming kept Annie's mind active.
Unfortunately, Annie continued to limp. Additional tests revealed that Annie had osteocronditus dissecons, OCD. She was clumsy and uncoordinated because she was experiencing constant pain. She underwent surgery to remove the cartilage from both her shoulders. She was prohibited from any exercise for two months, including swimming.
In February, Annie was cleared to swim. She was ecstatic. Although Annie needed to start slow, by the third session she was having a full 30 minute work out. The physio therapist, from the Animal Critical Care Hospital, had asked that you measure Annie's extension of her front legs; Annie had regained full extension. I attribute a lot of Annie's mental and physical recovery to swimming, before and after surgery.
Annie has gained weight and muscle mass now hat she has resumed swimming. The cartilage will take another two months to fully grow back. Until then she is not allowed to run and play because the movement will fully extend her legs. In the mean time, swimming will encourage her recovery.
Annie belonds to the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS). I am her puppy raiser. Kendall has been very respectful of Annie's special purpose and have kept to the commands prescribed by PADS. Thank you.

We got Chester from a friend of a friend. The family was moving and did not want to take the dog with them. The daughter was going to college and did not have a place for Chester. The father wanted to travel and did not want him either. Chester was the wife's dog, and she had died a few years earlier.
We told the owner we'd take Chester, but the owner did not like the idea that we did not have a backyard. Chester's family had one and Chester had never left it.
Our friends talked to the owner, finally after about 4 months the daughter phoned me. She phoned two days before they were moving out and asked if I still wanted the dog. I said yes and went over to pick him up. Chester jumped right into my lap and I took him home that afternoon. We didn't even have a bowl for him! I got him home and took him for a walk and gave him a bath, he was very dirty. With no brush we had to use a vacuum! That is how we got Chester, it was the best thing we ever did.
