Sandy is a one year old Jack Russel Terrier who was diagnosed with Legg Calve Perthes Disease when she was nine months old. Legg Calve Perthes Disease is a vascular necrosis in which the bone that makes up the ball portion of the hip is damaged from lack of blood supply. The terrier is one of the breeds which have a higher incidence of this disorder, which may be genetic. Sandy displayed lameness in her right rear leg around Christmas 2002. At first we thought it was just a strain and waited a week. We then took her into the Veterinarian for a check up and was diagnosed. This was confirmed by x-ray. she was given shots for a month and half to see if the fluid could be built up in the joint for lubrication. Sandy still did not use her leg after this therapy. Since she is such a young dog it was decided she would have a femoral osteotomy where the ball of the hip is removed. This diminishes the painful bony contact in the hip joint.
Sandy has recovered from the surgery on March 13, 2003 and is now at K9 H2O to build up her leg muscles that had atrophied in order for her to again bear weight on her leg. Full recovery can take between six to twelve months before good use of the affected leg returns.
