Dr. Sandra Mercer Moore, DBA., MPh ty. President, World Confederation for Physical Therapy.

The World Confederation for Physical Therapy ('A/OPT) is a non-governmental organization founded in 1951. it has 85 Member Organizations which are the national physical therapy associations representing 250,000 physical therapists around the world. The Confederation ha an official relationship with the World Health Organization and specialized agencies of the United Nations. It aims to improve global health by:

  • Representing physical therapy and physical therapists internationally.
  • Collaborating with international and national organization.
  • Encouraging high standards of physical therapy research, education and practice.
  • Supporting communication and exchange of information among Regions and Member organizations of WPTC.
At the request of the World Health Organization, WCPT has been compiling a profile of the profession. Having a global picture of the profession will assist us in conjoint projects with WHO especially in areas of human and financial resource allocation. Member Organizations were requested to supply data relating to demographics, professional autonomy, regulation and standards of education. The data has been complied and analyzed on a regional rather than individual basis with the results presented in this paper.
The paper also addresses some of the WCPT Declaration of Principle, which record the Confederation's agreed stance on issues affecting the practice of physical therapy internationally. Such Declarations require a two-thirds majority vote of all delegates present and entitled to vote at the general Meeting thereby becoming binding policy for all Member Organizations.
The World Confederation for Physical Therapy recognizes that there is considerable diversity in the social, economic and political environment in which physical therapy is expressed, regulated and conducted throughout the world. One of the Confederation's principal objectives is to assist its Member Organizations to reach agreed standards of research, education and practice.
