Dystonia is a neurological syndrome characterized by involuntary, sustained, patterned and often repetitive muscle contractions of opposing muscles causing twisting movements or abnormal postures. Dystonia is either a symptom of an underlying disorder or a specific disease entity (secondary). When no cause can be identified, the dystonia is said to be primary. It can also be classified according to its distribution i.e. focal or generalized. Examples of focal dystonia include torticollis, writers cramps, foot dystonias, and oromandibular dystonia. The clinical consequences of dystonia include pain discomfort and functional disturbance to the affected part of the body like functional blindness, difficulty in chewing and speaking, inability to use the limbs in writing, typing or walking. Botulinum Toxin A represents a significant advancement in the management of these disorders. In this presentation, we will discuss our ten years experience in the management of dystonia in lbn Sina Hospital.
