(May - July)

London, UK

Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis
Aberdaron, Wales, May 1992.

A small influx of at least 10 birds appeared in
the UK in May 1992.

Garganey Anas querquedula
Cley, Norfolk, May 1992.

A splendid summer plumaged drake. Some of
the first spring records of this species are noted
here in early-mid March.

Red-legged Partridge Alectoris rufa
Holkham, Norfolk, May 1992.

A very obliging bird. In Norfolk they are a
lot easier to stumble across than the native
Grey Partridge Perdix perdix.

Ortolan Bunting Emberiza hortulana
Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, May 1992.

The cemetery at Great Yarmouth is a notorious
rarity hotspot. This summer plumaged male paid
a brief visit to this mecca.

Always a smart bird to see. They look "exotic"
when feeding alongside the local House Sparrows
Passer domesticus.

Serin Serinus serinus
Reydon, Suffolk, May 1992.

It may have been tricky to spot high up in
the conifer trees, but it betrayed its presence
as it was constantly rattling away in song.

Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis
Bardney, Lincolnshire, May 1992.

This adult breeding plumaged bird gave excellent
views.

Arctic Tern Sterna paradisea
Cemlyn Bay, Anglesey, Wales, June 1992.

The stout deep-red bill of this species is clear
to see in this photograph.

This site provides birders with an excellent
opportunity of photographing terns in the
summer months.

Red-backed Shrike Lanius colluro
Spurn, East Yorkshire, June 1992.

Normally given top-billing, this migrant was
"outclassed" by the UK's 2nd ever Marmora's
Warbler Sylvia sarda present in the area.

Little Gull Larus minutus
Titchwell RSPB, Norfolk, June 1992.

A 1st summer bird with more-or-less a full
black hood. This site is good for this species
on spring migration to the Baltic region.

Great White Egret Ardea alba alba
Stanford Res., Leics/Northants., July 1992.

This bird was tracked moving down the eastern
half of the UK from Newcastle.

Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus
Oban, Scotland, July 1992.

An adult bird in breeding plumage. The still water
and sunny conditions made for a good photograph.

Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus
Broomhill Flash, South Yorkshire, July 1992.

This adult swam close to the hide allowing for
this photo opportunity.

Western Yellow-legged Gull Larus (cachinnans) michahellis
Broomhill Flash, South Yorkshire, July 1992.

This type of Gull occurs regularly in the south of the UK,
particularly in summer when they can be located in flocks
of Lesser-black Backed Gulls Larus fuscus graellsii.
This sub-adult showed typical plumage features, including
red orbital-ring of the eyes, large amount of black to the
primaries and dark grey colour of the upperparts.

The bulbous head of this species can be seen here.

The yellow-legs are visible in this record shot.
