Little Egret Egretta
garzetta Pennington, Lymington, Hampshire, April 2000.
Whilst waiting to see a Great Spotted Cuckoo Clamator
glandarius, this delightful bird showed well in the sunshine. It's
amazing how many birders hardly gave it a second glance. This would not
have happened 10 years or so ago!

|
Marbled Teal Marmaronetta
angustirostris Kelling, Norfolk, May 2000.
Well it was
reasonably wary, apparently had a full set of wings, and was unringed.
So was it a wild one?
|

|
This bird stayed for one day before departing.
A decent sign of a classical overshooting Spring migrant. Well, you
decide...
|

|
Black-necked Grebe
Podiceps nigricollis Broomhill Flash, South Yorkshire, May 2000.
An influx of this species to the eastern half of Britain included this
splendid bird that appeared at my old local patch. Unfortunately it was
too distant to get a decent photograph.
|

|
Canada Goose
Branta canadensis Barnsley Moors, South Yorkshire,
Summer 2000.
Well, what do you make of this. Maybe the goose was looking for the
Montagu's Harrler Circus pygargus that had spent some time
in the area.
|

|
Still no sign of the Monty's! Let's go for a
wander.
|

|
Gull Larus sp.
King's Lynn, Norfolk, July 2000.
Oh dear! Is it a
"heuglini", "cachinnans", odd "michahellis" or some "large gull"
hybrid or integrade? The bird in question is at the top left.
There is a 1st summer- type Yellow-legged Gull (michahellis) at
the bottom right of the photograph.
|

|
A ragged looking bird. Following
contacts with birders from overseas, it is not a "heuglini" type.
|

|
The mystery gull on the shore. What
do you
think about its identity?
|

|
Yellow-legged Gull Larus
(cachinnans) michahellis
King's Lynn, Norfolk, July 2000.
A 1st summer-type
michahellis. Decent comparison with the mystery gull in the above
photograph. |

|
A 1st summer bird
(top right) with a 1st summer Great Black backed Gull (top left) for
comparison.
|

|
An adult (right)
with an adult Herring Gull L. argentatus
argenteus (left). Note the deeper blue/gey wing
colour, longer looking bird and the red spot on the
lower mandible of the bird on the right. Of 2 adult-types present one
possessed a ring (EA538792). This bird was rung as a nestling in
Marseille, France in May 1995.
|

|
Great White Egret
Ardea alba alba Welney, Norfolk, July 2000.
A flight
shot of
the adult that toured around East Anglia.
