Tour 2000

This town makes Blackpool seem posh! Pretty much every A road into town was shut for accidents in the wind and rain so we had to take the backroads in. We should have taken our time because there was nowhere to go. We ended up parking on the road near the quay and sleeping off our hangovers for 3 hours. Then we drove around a bit and decided we had to do something vaguely active or we’d melt into the car seats so we went bowling.

We made it down to the venue for about 7pm and discovered the benefit of making friends with the touts when they sold us tickets for £10 each even though they were charging everyone else full price. The venue itself looked like a massive dump from the outside but was quite nice inside. It has this bouncy wooden floor (like in the Manchester Ritz, for those who are familiar with the place) which moved up and down everytime the crowd got excited, which was most of the gig. James added another new song into the set which reminded me a bit of “Dream Thrum” and was slow and very pretty. Plus, in the surprise moment of the tour, they included “Runaground” which John and I had both assumed would never be played live again. Tim told the crowd that in the days before the band were known for one song they had prided themselves on being very experimental and they were trying to get back to that. Certainly the crowd appreciated it. Again, it was a very vibrant gig with a lot a interaction between the band and the crowd. And, sadly in a kind of obsessive way, after 5 gigs I can now sing along with 3 or 4 of the new songs. After the show we got off to London pretty quickly as I had to back in Manchester on Saturday for 3pm. The five days rest are very much needed. (Justhipper)
