Amateur went shopping
Written on : 2 May 2001

Let me share with you my shopping adventure.... ha....ha... puzzled eh? Shopping also have adventure story to tell ha...ha....

Usually it is my mum who went shopping for groceries and household stuffs. But yesterday she was busy and since I was not working on Labour Day, she asked me to buy two packs of toilet rolls(10 rolls per pack). Accordingly to her, there is an One-day special offer for Labour Day in a supermarket. The normal price is RM7.20 but now the offer price is RM5.90

Thinking that the supermarket opens at 10:00 am, so I went to there at 10:20 am. I was surprised to see a group of people waiting outside the supermarket. Then I realised that it opens at 10:30 am and not 10:00 am as I thought. Since it is just another 10 minutes, so I decided to wait together with the crowd.

As I was waiting, I observed those people around me. Most of them had the shopping cart ready. While waiting, some of them reading the leaflet of the offer items and discuss what to buy. One mum even told her children when the door open, one to go to get the Milo, another to get the toilet rolls, while the third child to get the toothpaste.

I was amused with what I observed and you guess what scenes came to my mind?
1. The women with hands gripping excitingly on shopping cart, made me think of drivers in racing cars at starting line with engine warming up in Formula One event!
2. Reading the leaflet of offer items, made me think of a gang of robbers analysing floor map and plan how to raid the shop.
3. Mum giving instruction to children, made me think of a commander giving order to his troop of army.

Suddenly my thoughts were interrupted by people pushing around me. Ah ha.... the door is open and everybody rushing to enter the supermarket. Ouch.... ouch.... I was nearly knocked down by those racing cars.... err.... I mean shopping carts. Finally I managed to struggle in one piece into the supermarket, I was overwhelmed by those shoppers who already have those offer items in their arms coming out. For a second, the enthusiasms of the shoppers made me wonder if the supermarket giving things away FREE!  This made me recalled of an American game show "Supermarket sweep" where the contestants were given a limited time to grab all they can in the supermarket to win the game.

Seeing a kid helping his mum holding the toilet rolls pack made me remember of my mission today. Now.... hummm.... where is the toilet rolls..... nope not here... these are canned foods section..... more people holding toilet rolls....... where did they got them? Now... where am I? Ah ha.... toothpaste section, must be close now..... should be somewhere nearby.... but where?

I saw more and more shoppers with toilet rolls.... one lady has 6 packs in her shopping cart. Suddenly FEAR flooded my mind, what if all the toilet rolls were grabbed by the shoppers and have none left...... the thought of going home empty handed and be reprimand by my mum made me dash madly to find them.

Phew.... finally I found them stacked up in piles at one corner. Every shoppers were lunging ahead to get their hands on the packs. A shop assistant was busying stamping to change the price tag. Surrounded by eager shoppers, the poor shop assistant couldn't stamp fast enough and pleading for the shoppers to wait. When one lady shopper refuse to wait and grab the pack, the shop assistant said, "I haven't change that price tag yet, if the cashier charge you RM7.20 instead of RM5.90 for that, please don't complain". Ha... this knocked some sense into the shopper heads, now all shoppers patiently wait for her to change the price before grabbing. After some elbow nudging, I managed to make a grab of two packs and headed for the cashier counter.

Along the way, I heard commotion and saw a crowd at the toothpaste section. One particular brand - Darlie has a special offer price, that is why the crowd is there grabbing the toothpaste. There are many other items with offer price, I am not going to check them out, I am going to get out of here as fast as I can.

Fortunately there are no long queue at the cashier counters. Phew.... I am glad that the other shoppers are still inside grabbing offer items. There is an elderly gentleman in front of me, he bought 48 bottles of Carlsberg. Humm... it must be another offer items.

On my way out, there are many more eager shoppers coming in. I met a friend, she saw me hugging the toilet rolls and asked, "How much is the toilet rolls?".
I smiled and replied, "It is cheap, only RM5.90. Quick.. quick go and grab some."
She smiled and hurried into the supermarket, leaving me to figure how to balance the two packs of toilet rolls on my motorbike.
