The last day of the Chinese New Year which is known as "Chap Goh Mei"
in Penang. According to the popular tale is that during the old days, unmarried
women used to go to Gurney Drive and the Esplanade to throw oranges into
the sea in the hope that they will get good husbands.
But now, this belief has become a competition, charity and fun event.
Oranges were sold and the money collected goes to charity organisations.
Young men and women from various youth organisation participated in a team
of 2 men and 2 women. The men were waiting on a boat at the sea front and
the women throw oranges into the sea for them to scoop. The team with most
oranges scooped win the prize. A large crowd of locals and tourists turned
up to witness this fun event.
