WHY HORSEBACK RIDING?
Therapeutic Horseback riding compliments clinical medicine in the treatment of physical and mental disabilities in both adults and children.
A major problem for many of the riders in the program is the deterioration of locomotor abilities. This may be due to spastic or ataxic symptoms, sensory impairment, physical deformity or other problems. Consequently, their independence and quality of life is reduced. This method of therapy is advantageous for several reasons: fatigue is minimal and there are no medication side effects. Moreover, if the horse is used as a therapy machine many people become more motivated. Horses are large, worm, intelligent animals. They provide a well shaped three-dimensional pattern of movement and acceleration. Their positive influence helps to bring about improvement in the riders physical and sensorimotor skills. Horses also provide a positive psychological influence. Therapeutic horseback riding sessions maximize physical therapy through the warmth and motion of the horse. Reaching and stretching games are played on horseback, thus improving muscle tone, co-ordination and balance. Social interaction and increased independence help to build self esteem.
