Cardiff North Labour Party has selected its candidate to stand in the 2007 elections to the National Assembly for Wales: Sophie Howe.

Sophie, who is currently a local councillor for the Whitchurch & Tongwynlais ward, was selected via the single tranferable vote in a ballot of all party members in Cardiff North.

The selection became necessary after the current Assembly Member for Cardiff North,
Sue Essex, decided not to seek re-election in 2007.

"I'm delighted to have been selected to stand for Labour in the 2007 Assembly elections," Sophie said.
Sophie Howe has been a councillor for Whitchurch & Tongwynlais since 1999
"Children and the family will be at the heart of my campaign. Labour in Westminster and in Cardiff Bay has delivered for ordinary families, and I want that work to continue."

Sophie is a proven local campaigner with an excellent track record during her time as a local councillor.

Since her election to County Hall in 1999, when she became the youngest councillor in Wales, Sophie has worked alongside local residents to tackle anti-social behaviour, promote family-friendly policies and oppose planning applications which threaten the character of the village - such as the Pegasus plans in Church Road.

Sophie was re-elected as a councillor in 2004 with a swing against her of just 0.02%, showing the level of support for her work locally.

Julie Morgan MP said: "I am looking forward to working with Sophie to help keep Cardiff North Labour at the 2007 Welsh Assembly elections. We have in Sophie someone with the experience and local knowledge to be an excellent representative for our area."

Sue Essex AM said: "Sophie will be an advocate for family-friendly policies which Labour in Cardiff Bay and in Westminster has been putting into practice. We have more help for young families than ever before, with programmes like SureStart and policies like the minimum wage and tax credits helping young mothers in particular.

"With two young children - and a third on the way - Sophie knows the challenges which families face and stands ready to bring that knowledge to the National Assembly for Wales."
