| Members of Parliament can ask oral questions of Ministers and make speeches in debates in the House of Commons Chamber. They also take part in Select and Standing Committees. | Julie is a member of two Select Committees of the House: the Constitutional Affairs Committee and the Public Administration Committee. These two Committees have a remit to carry out enquiries into Government expenditure and policy. So far this Session the two Committees have held evidence sessions and produced reports on subjects as varied as the publication of memoirs by former politicians and civil servants, ID cards and the Ministry of Defence scheme which compensates former Japanese prisoners of war. | Julie welcomes tougher sentences for the worst criminals July 20: Julie has welcomed Home Secretary John Reid's announcement that he is to toughen up the sentencing guidelines for those who commit particularly heinous offences. Citing the appalling case involving Craig Sweeney, Julie told the Commons that "sentencing guidelines should be aimed at the most dangerous offenders and those who are the greatest risk to the public". | Llanishen Reservoir: Julie takes WPD to task 6 July: Julie has raised WPD's abuse of Llanishen and Lisvane Reservoirs in the Commons. During the weekly Business Questions session, Julie said: "Western Power Distribution is planning to partly concrete over the reservoir, despite huge public opposition. The area has been a beauty spot for many years, but that is being replaced by spiked metal poles and barking Alsatians." Read the full transcript |
| Julie presents Ten Minute Rule Bill on security of tenure 4 July: Julie has presented her own proposed law to make provision for security of tenure for Gypsies and Travellers. Her Bill, introduced under the Ten Minute Rule, would place occupants of local authority official sites on a par with occupants of local authority "bricks and mortar" accommodation.
