Education Minister meets the kids who designed their own playground
12 December 2005
Welsh Labour Education Minister Jane Davidson will meet the Cardiff schoolchildren who have designed their own playground today.

She is visiting Coryton Primary School in Whitchurch, where the children have not only selected all of their own play equipment, but have also designed their own pathway through the playground. Jane Davidson will be joined by Labour Cardiff North Assembly Candidate and Whitchurch & Tongwynlais Councillor Sophie Howe, who came up with the idea.
Jane Davidson said: "Learning through play is an important part of this Labour Assembly Government's education policy. We believe that play allows children to solve problems, take risks and make decisions.

"The Coryton Primary School project is an excellent example of children coming up with ideas of their own and making their own decisions. I know that Sophie has put a lot of hard work into this project and I am delighted that it has been made to work."

Sophie said: "As a working mum I believe that strong families and the best facilities for children should be at the centre of politics in Wales. That is why I have always prioritised working hard for families as a local councillor in Whitchurch and why strong families will be at the heart of my campaign for the National Assembly.

"The Assembly Government has an exciting and groundbreaking policy on learning through play that is leading the rest of Britain in properly developing our children into the next generation of smart and capable young citizens.

"That is why it is so great to see the local children making the most of their new play equipment, especially as they put so much hard work into the playground."
