New midwife-led service delivering for mums 4 January 2006
In a few months she will be there as a proud mum. But tomorrow Labour Assembly Candidate for Cardiff North Sophie Howe will be visiting the new midwife-led maternity unit at the University Hospital of Wales with the Welsh Health Minister to see how it is offering a new service to mothers. Sophie, who is also part of the new maternity services users' group at the hospital, has placed the family at the heart of her campaign for the Assembly election in 2007.
Welsh Labour Health Minister Brian Gibbons said: "I know that Sophie has been committed to making this maternity unit work for local mums in Cardiff. She works hard for local families both as a councillor and, in this case, on the new maternity users' group, which was set up to ensure that patients have a constructive input into the way maternity services in our capital city are run. "World-class maternity units are important to the people of Wales and to Welsh Labour. That is why we have invested in training 94 new midwives over the last year." Sophie said: "Giving birth is clearly a wonderful and yet highly stressful period of time for mums and it is vital that they receive the very best care and advice. "The new midwifery-led unit can offer services that were not previously available to expectant mums. The whole emphasis of the UHW midwifery unit is a far less hospitalised environment with a new birthing pool and generally more homely environment providing a much more familiar setting for mums. "I'm pleased that Brian took time out of his busy schedule to visit the unit and talk to staff about their experiences with the service."
