If you haven't seen the show, Iron Chef is a Japanese variety/cooking
show of sorts. The concept of the show is that a flamboyant gourmand, portrayed by Kaga Takeshi,
lives in his castle with his "Iron Chefs." These Iron Chefs are the top chefs in the culinary fields of Japanese, Chinese,
French and Italian cooking. Each week, Kaga will choose a challenger chef (from anywhere on the planet) to do battle against his Iron Chefs.
Kaga will present a theme ingredient and each chef will then be charged with preparing a
multi-course meal that utilizes the theme ingredient in each course. The best shows involve a theme ingredient that's
alive...like octopus or eel or squid. The two chefs have to run up and grab the live
things and put then in pans to take back to their side of the kitchen, it's
great. The chefs have one hour to cook. Then, Kaga and four judges taste the food and pronounce winner. Sometimes there are ties and a 30
minute cook-off battle, with its own theme ingredient, will need to be held.
Iron Chef airs every Friday and Saturday at midnight and at 6pm on Sundays on The Food Network, which is channel 50 here in College
Station. My favorite part of the show is the first 10 minutes. If you miss
this, you miss everything. They have this dramatic music playing in the background, and they tell the story of Kaga and his Kitchen Stadium and
then they do a big pan over of the stadium with all of the little chef
assistants. The Iron Chefs rise up from the ground in front of the huge murals of themselves, each holding some kind of vegetable or fruit and
Kitchen Stadium is ready for another battle. Then, my favorite part, Kaga picks up this huge yellow pepper, takes a big juicy bite of the thing,
and then slowly smiles at the camera with an expression that you have to see for yourself. It's hilarious, words can't do it justice, you have to see
for yourself.
To truly enjoy Iron Chef you must truly enjoy bad voice- overs. It's hilarious, they have what sounds like a California surfer dude dubbing
over for some distinguished Japanese man. And when they have a girl voiceover it's even worse. They get the biggest airheads with the
dumbest giggles, it's pathetic, but funny nonetheless. |
this is Kaga, taking
