History

The AAU was founded in 1995-96 in order to foster a more tolerant environment at Dover-Sherborn.

Since then, we have participated in numerous events, including ELNA conferences and the Walk for One. We've also raised money for Bosnian schoolchildren, sponsored a series of speakers on terrorism, visited a mosque, and have worked with the Sherborn Peace Abbey. The AAU is the sponsor of the school-wide biannual Seminar Day, and also the annual AAU Community Breakfast.

Events

The AAU sponsors the annual Community Breakfast for Dover-Sherborn. These breakfasts are open to all residents of both Dover and Sherborn and have been successes. Our speaker in 2002 was Lewis Randa, on the subject "Why Bother?" In 2003, we gathered together and heard speakers from OxFam America about the Fair Trade Coffee campaign.

Also put on by the AAU is the school-wide biannual Seminar Day. Last year's Seminar Day took place on December 4, 2002. We had many speakers, including former Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate Jill Stein, Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank, members from the International Refugee Committee, musician Chad Urmstrom (formerly of Dispatch), and many more people with amazing stories to tell! On this day, students attended seminars that they had chosen. (For a complete list of speakers, click here.) Throughout the day, students had opportunities to learn about different walks of life that they might not have known about in the past, attending seminars entirely of their own choosing.
