Generation One

232. Willis1 NORTHCUTT. I believe Willis and William are the same person. Records list one or the other, but they are never listed together. Denise Moore believe he may have been the additional male, born 1760-1770, listed with the family of Willis NORTHCUTT in the 1830 Miami Co, OH, census was born on 10 Dec 1768 South Carolina.15,2 Additional evidence indicates he was born between 1760 and 1770.1 He and Eleanor "Nellie" "Ellen" WILSON were married est. circa 1795? He died on 10 May 1847 in Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio, at age 78.15 He is buried in Lost Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio.15

William NORTHCUTT is listed in the 1790 Tax List of Mason County, Kentucky. Willis NORTHCUT was listed in the Mason Co, KY, tax list on 21 May 1794 (one white male over 21 and four cattle). Since he was at least 21 on 21 May 1796, he must have been born before 21 May 1773. Willis NORTHCUTT was listed in the Mason County, Kentucky, tax lists on 21 Mar 1795 (two white males over 21, one horse, and three cattle), and 11 May 1796 (one white male over 21 and six horses). He may be the father or a brother of Shadrach (Shadrach may be the second male recorded in 1795. The following records have been found in Greene Co, OH.

On 24 Dec 1801, a Willis NORTHCUT, a resident of Hamilton Co, OH, purchased land in Section 4, Township 3, Range 5.289 In 1803, WIllis settled in Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio. On 22 Dec 1804, Willis NORTHCUT, a resident of Warren Co, purchased additional land in Section 4, Township 3, Range 5.289 A William NORTHCUTT was an appraiser in Greene Co, OH, in 1805 and 1806.290 Willis NORTHCUTT purchased land in Section 13, Township 2, Range 11 (Lost Creek Township) on 2 Apr 1809, from Abia B. MARTIN and his wife, Sarah (WILSON) MARTIN, sister of Eleanor.1 On 2 Dec 1817, he purchased land in Section 6, Township 2, Range 11 (Brown Township), Miami County, OH.1 On 30 Mar 1818, he purchased land in Section 10, Township 2, Range 11 (Lost Creek Township).1 He is listed as head of household on the 1820 census Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio, as Willis NORTHCUT. The census lists his household as one male 10-15 (George, age 15); one male 16-25 (William, age 16); one male 45 and over (Willis, age 52); three females under 10 (Cynthia was 11); one female 10-15 (Mary, age 13); and one female 45 and over (wife, Eleanor, age 48). It is unknown who the two other females, under 10, were.291 On 26 Aug 1825, he sold some of his land in Lost Creek Twp (purchased in 1818) to Jarvis STOKES.1 On 5 Nov 1825, he sold the rest of his land to William NORTHCUTT (possibly a son or a brother).1 On 13 Jun 1826, he sold his land in Brown Twp to Giles JOHNSTON.1 He is listed as head of household on the 1830 census as WIllis Northcut. The census lists his household as one male 10-14, two males 60-69 (Willis, age 62), two females 10-14, one female 15-19, and one female 50-59 (Eleanor, age 58).16 He was enumerated on the 1840 census Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio, as WIllis Northcut. The census lists his household as one male 50-59, one male 60-69, one male 70-79 (Willis, age 72), and one female 60-69 (Eleanor, age 68). It is unknown who the two other males were.17

Eleanor "Nellie" "Ellen" WILSON was born on 12 Aug 1772 Sussex County, New Jersey.2,1 According to the 1860 census, she was born circa 1773 in New Jersey.292 She died on 30 Jun 1860 in Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio, at age 87.1 She is buried in Lost Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio.1 On 2 Apr 1814, she joined the Honey Creek baptist Church, in Jackson Twp, Champaign, OH. On 4 Apr 1818, she was listed as dismissed, however, on a later listing, about 1830s, she was again mentioned as a member.1 She was enumerated on the 20 Jul 1860 census Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio, as Ellen NORTHCUTT. She was listed as age 87, owning personal property worth $1,400, born in New Jersey.293

Margaret2 NORTHCUTT (Willis1) was born on 25 Jul 1796 Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky.15,1,294,295 According to the 1860 census, she was born circa 1797 in Kentucky.293 She married James BUCKLES, son of James BUCKLES and Elizabeth BROOKS, on 11 Sep 1818 in Miami County, Ohio.51,1 Conflicting evidence indicates she and James BUCKLES were married on 10 Sep 1818 in Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio.296,295 She died on 30 Dec 1880 in Lena, Miami County, Ohio, at age 84.15,295

She was enumerated on the 20 Jul 1860 census Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio, as Margaret BUCKLES. She was listed as age 63, born in Kentucky.293

James BUCKLES was born on 8 Jun 1797 Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.296 According to the 1860 census, he was born circa 1798 in North West Territory.293 He died on 8 Jun 1872 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, at age 75.295 He is listed as head of household on the 20 Jul 1860 census Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio, as James BUCKLES. The census listed him as age 62, farmer, owning real estate worth $8,000 and personal property worth $1,200, born in North West Territory. Enumerated with him were Margaret BUCKLES, Ellen BUCKLES, Mary BUCKLES, and Ellen NORTHCUTT.293

Mary "Polly" Anna2 NORTHCUTT (Willis1) was born circa 1800 Warren County, Ohio.15 Conflicting evidence indicates she was born on 7 Aug 1815.295 She married John BUCKLES, son of David BUCKLES and Elizabeth COUVALT, on 16 Aug 1833 in Miami County, Ohio.294 Conflicting evidence indicates she and John BUCKLES were married on 10 Aug 1833 in Miami County, Ohio.295 She died on 5 Mar 1887 in Dunkirk, Jay County, Indiana.294,295

John BUCKLES was born on 21 Dec 1812 Marietta, Washington County, Ohio.295 He died on 25 Dec 1898 in Miami County, Ohio, at age 86.295

The four known children of Mary "Polly" Anna2 NORTHCUTT and John BUCKLES were as follows:

238. William2 NORTHCUTT (Willis1) was born circa 1804. He married Mary JENNINGS in Miami County, Ohio.

Denise Moore thinks William may have been the male (born 1760-1770) listed in the 1830 census in the household of Willis NORTHCUTT in Miami Co, OH, and may be a brother of WIllis, Margaret, and Shadrack. It is also possible he was the son of Willis. Wililam, born about 1804, would have been 21 when he purchased land from his father in 1825. On 5 Nov 1825, he purchased land in Section 10, Township 2, Range 11 (Lost Creek Township) from his father, William NORTHCUTT.1 On 11 Aug 1829, he sold his land in Lost Creek Twp, Miami, OH, to Edward JONES. On the same day, he sold land, in Section 24, Township 1, Range 12 (Orange Township, Shelby Co, OH) to Edward JONES.1 On 29 Dec 1829, he purchased land in Section 2, Township 2, Range 9 (Bethel Township) from Jesse HUNT. He sold this land to Joshua H. SCARFF on 5 Sep 1832. He is listed as head of household on the 1830 census Bethel Township, Miami County, Ohio, as Wm. Northcut. The census records his household as two males 5-9, one male 20-29 (William, age 26), one female under 5, and one female 20-29 (wife).18

Mary JENNINGS was born circa 1804. She died.

The three known children of William2 NORTHCUTT and Mary JENNINGS were as follows:

George2 NORTHCUTT (Willis1) was born on 28 Jul 1805 Warren County, Ohio.15 According to the 1850 census, he was born circa 1805 in Ohio.14 He married Judith HANCE, daughter of William HANCE and Margaret NORTHCUTT, on 6 Sep 1825 in Ohio.1 Conflicting evidence indicates he and Judith HANCE were married on 3 Sep 1825 in Miami County, Ohio.15 He died on 2 Apr 1898 in North Verdon, Richardson County, Nebraska, at age 92.15 Conflicting evidence indicates he died in 1893 in Nebraska.2 He is buried in Baptist Cemetery, North Salem, Richardson County, Nebraska.15

He is listed as head of household on the 1830 census Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio, as Geo. Northcut. The census lists his household as two males under 5 (John, age 1, and William, age 2), one male 20-29 (George, age 25), one female under 5 (Elizabeth, age 3), and one female 20-29 (Judith, age 26).16 On 18 Oct 1830, he purchased land in Section 13, Township 2, Range 11 (Lost Creek Township) from his father, Willis NORTHCUTT. He was enumerated on the 1840 census Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio, as Geo. Northcut. The census lists his household one male under 5 (James, age 5), two males 5-9 (John, age 11, and William, age 12), one male 20-29, one male 30-39 (George, age 35), two females under 5 (Mary, newborn, and Cynthia, age 3), two females 5-9 (Margaret, age 8, and Elizabeth, age 13), one female 30-39 (wife, Judith, age 36), and one female 60-69.17 He is listed as head of household on the 21 Aug 1850 census Hamilton Township, Delaware County, Indiana, as George NORTHCUT. The census listed him as age 45, farmer, born in Ohio. Enumerated with him were Judas NORTHCUT, Elizabeth M. NORTHCUTT, John P. NORTHCUT, Margaret E. NORTHCUT, James B. NORTHCUT, Cynthia NORTHCUT, Mary NORTHCUT, Sarah A. NORTHCUT, Joseph C. NORTHCUT, Vincent NORTHCUT, and Sylvester J. NORTHCUT.14

Judith HANCE was born circa 1804 (prob) Mason County, Kentucky. According to the 1850 census, she was born circa 1804 in Kentucky.1,14 She was enumerated with George NORTHCUT on the 21 Aug 1850 census Hamilton Township, Delaware County, Indiana, as Judas NORTHCUT. She was listed as age 46, born in Kentucky. Judith HANCE was listed in the household of George NORTHCUT.14

William3 BUCKLES (Margaret2NORTHCUTT, Willis1) was born on 8 May 1833 Miami County, Ohio.294,296,295 According to the 1860 census, he was born circa 1833 in Ohio.292 He married Olivia Ann KIRBY, daughter of Joel KIRBY and Hannah WILSON, on 24 Dec 1854 in Miami County, Ohio.294,296,295 He died on 5 Apr 1916 in Lena, Miami County, Ohio, at age 82.294,296,295

He is listed as head of household on the 20 Jul 1860 census Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio, as William BUCKLES. The census listed him as age 27, farmer, born in Ohio.292

Olivia Ann KIRBY was born on 5 Oct 1833 Miami County, Ohio.294,295 According to the 1860 census, she was born circa 1834 in Ohio.292 She died on 15 Jul 1921 at age 87.294,295 She is buried in Fletcher Cemetery, Brown Township, Miami County, Ohio.294,295 She was enumerated on the 20 Jul 1860 census Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio, as Olivia A. William G. MANNING was born on 21 Apr 1828 Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland.295 He died on 6 Aug 1910 in Dunkirk, Jay County, Indiana, at age 82.294,295
