(Tombstone reads: "Runyon L. Northcutt, Died 12/25/1834, Age 29y 9m ?d").71,1,35

He was a saddler and harness maker in Champaign Co, OH. Middleton's History of Champaign Co lists him as being born in 1795. His tombstone records his age as 29y 9m ?d, which would make his birthdate Mar 1805.. He was enumerated on the 1830 census Champaign County, Ohio,. His household was listed as one male 20-29, one male under 5, one female 20-29, and one female under the age of 5.
Lucinda had two children after the death of Runyon in 1834. Joseph, born 1841, and WIlliam, born 1845. They were living with Lucinda in the 1850 census. They were not listed by Shadrach in his will dated 1850..

Lucinda PENCE was born in 1810 Urbana Township, Champaign County, Ohio.71 She died on 10 Feb 1860 in Urbana Township, Champaign County, Ohio.71,1 Runyon was not listed in the 1840 Census, but his wife, Lucinda, is listed being between 30-39 (with another female 30-39), and daughter (Emily) 5-9, and two sons (John & Edward) 5-9. In 1850, the Census listed Lucinda, age 41, living in Madison Twp, with their four younger children, Emily, age 18, Edward, age 16, "Jos" (Joseph), age 8, and "Wm H", age 4. She was enumerated on the 1840 census Mad River, Champaign County, Ohio, as Lucinda Northcutt. (Dollie Northcutt states "At death of husband, Sarah with seven children removed to Sangamon Co, Ill., 1839, m. 2nd. Mr Smith, Removed to Oregon where she died 1871."

Based on the dates of birth for the last four children, Willis must not have died until after 1848. A Willis NORTHCUT married Emily GREENE 18 May 1847 in Sangamon County, Illinois. It is possible Willis and Sarah were divorced and Willis remarried. Evidence also indicates he may not have died in Illinois, but may have moved to Oregon. According to the History of Appanoose County, Iowa, Willis and Sarah N. moved to Oregon).79,77,80 On 23 Aug 1850, four of his children were recorded in the 1850 census, living in Wapello County, Iowa: Margaret R., Salathiel, Mary Eliza, and Harriet M. To the homesteaders and early settlers of Grant County this monument is gratefully dedicated. In recognition of their courage in the face of untold hardships the descendants sincerely acknowledge their sense of obligation.

These early Grant County settlers were among some 100,000 who lined up September 16, 1893 to race for a 160 acre claim. The homesteads scattered throughout an area comprising six million acres. The award went to the first person arriving, planting their stake and duly registering their location at the land office.

Others while not actually making the run acquired the land at an early date, either by purchase or barter, lived on it and raise their families and together with the homesteaders became the early pioneer settlers of Grant County, laying the foundation for our modern society.
