He is the son of Angerinol Thalion and Fedawyn Goran, and older brother of Elilith. Both Merenmenel and his sister are descendants of Sindarin blood and the Third House of Edain. Growing up, Merenmenel was schooled in all elven ways, both political and artistic. His father, Angerinol, was one of Elrond's first Advisors. Therefore, it was only proper that Merenmenel be educated in the ways of elven politics. Fedawyn, Meren's mother, was a renouned vocalist and musician. Under her instruction, Merenmenel learned the art of the elven flute and dance. In addition to politics and the arts, Merenmenel took an interest in weapons craft as well. At the young age of twenty, Merenmenel spent his spare time training at the school of arms under the instruction of Til-Garil, one of the older veteran fighters who had migrated to Rivendell. From Til-Garil, Meren learned the art of making a good, strong bow and quiver of arrows. He soon excelled in this craft and became Til-Garil's apprentice. Meren also learned the art of combat, both hand to hand and with an array of weaponry. His skill matched that of his bow making, and he took a liking to using the elven spear. Soon, Meren was accepted into the Army of Imladris as a scout at the age of 2,356. Meren was then sent abroad to the surrounding territories to collect information for King Elrond. He ventured North as far as Lindon, then East to Rhovanion, and deep South to Lorien. This venture took many years, and Merenmenel only returned home when there was grave news to report. During Meren's time as a scout, he encountered many dangers in his travels. He fought against the dark beings of Mirkwood, the occassional troll, and more than his share of orcs and Uruk-hai. Because of his bravery and skill in battle, Meren was promoted upon his return to Rivendell to Elrond's Guard. There, he served Elrond well. He became one of Elrond's most trusted Guardsmen, and was often sent to collect reports of the utmost importance abroad. It was on one of his ventures to Lorien that he met Lady Naira. He had been collecting important reports from Haldir on orc movement in the area when Lady Naira had arrived from her travels. At the time, Meren had completed collecting his reports and was spending a few days leisure time before he set out for Rivendell once more. There had been a festival celebrating the bloom of Elanor in the golden fields of Lorien, and it was among those golden fields and silver trees that Meren had first beheld the Lady Naira. It was love at first site. He had never seen such dark, elven beauty as hers before. True, the Lady Arwen was beautiful, but Naira had exuded an aura of beauty that Meren could not explain. He had approached her with his flute in hand, playing an inpromtu melody that he would later name after her. She had stood there in the wood, flowers wound in her hair, smiling with angelic fervor. From then on, every moment Meren spent in Lorien was with her. With love taking over their lives, the idea of separation seemed to painful to bear. When Meren returned to Imladris, Naira went with him. In Imladris they served together in the Guard and lived a happy and peaceful life. Peaceful, that is, until Naira recieved a letter form Lynx Crowfoot, a friend from her days of travel. Shotly after Naira's leave to Minas Tirith, Meren was promoted yet again before Elrond's departure across the sea. He was now Third Captain of Elrond's Guard. As the earth became restless and movement among the dark beings began to stir more and more, Meren was charged to go South and follow the company that Naira was now in. Joined by many other free people's, Meren traveled far to aid in the defeat of King Erkhan. |
