19th Japanese Language Speech Contest

The Annual Texas Japanese Speech Contest is the statewide competition for students at all levels in Japanese language and Culture.It offers participants an opportunity to demonstrate their oral communication skills in Japanese while competing in a statewide competition and the winners of level IV will compete at the National Japanese Speech Contest in Los Angeles. Students and teachers are hard at practice together engaging in a yearlong preparation and perseverance in language learning for culture, academic and mutual benefits that will bring students a valuable learning experience for life.

The 19th Texas State Japanese Language Speech Contest will be held as described below. The Entry Form to each Regeonal contest is also provided below. Please complete the form and submit to each regional representative.

Contestants must :
1) Reside in Texas ( Division V ) or
2) Be currently enrolled in a Japanese class at a school in Texas
(Divison I - IV)
3) Not to be a native speaker of Japanese
4) Not have a Japanese parent
5) Not have visited Japan for more than three months since 2001
6) Not have received any schooling in Japan after age six.
7) Not speak Japanese at home.

Divisions

Divisions I - III : Poetry Recitation

Content :
Contestants must memorize the poem specified for his/her division. Each contestant should say the title and author of the poem, then recite the poem from memory. The use of notes is not allowed.

Time Limit :
The time limit for Division I-III is three minutes. Points will be subtracted for speeches which are over the time limit.

Evaluation Criteria:
Poetry recitation will be judged on pronunciation, flow and expression,accuracy of memorization, and delivery.

Divisions IV & V : Free Speech

Content :
Free Speech must be original, written by the contestant and not previously recited elsewhere. The theme is open and to be selected by the contestant. Personal experience and anecdote are welcomed and encouraged.

Time Limit :
The time limit is three minutes, and the contestant must speak for at least two minutes. Points will be sub tracked for speeches which are over or under the time limit.

Notes:
Contestants may use written materials or notes, but those who deliver their speeches without them will be scored higher than those who rely on notes.

Evaluation Criteria:
Free Speeches will be judged on pronunciation, grammatical ability, overall ability, content, delivery, creativity, enthusiasm, and understanding.

Prizes

Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners in each division. Special prizes will be presented by sponsors for students with special talent in speech.

1st place winner from Div. IV willp articipate in Aurora Speech Contest or The Fifth Annual USA National Japanese language High School Speech Contest 2008 in Los Angeles, CA.

Participants

There will be a limit of 40 participants per division and 8 applicants from
each school. Applications will be accepted in the order in which they are
received. Once the 40 applicant limit for each division has been reached
no more applications will be accepted for that division. Therefore, it is
important to send applications as soon as possible.

1st and 2nd place winners from Division I - V will participate Texas State Contest.
