Ever wanted to lose ten extra pounds, or on the other side perhaps gain ten. Here's how. A method that doesn't require special diets, exercise, drugs or other weird things; it's so simple, you may just have to try it. Wait a minute, what's this going to cost? Books to buy, special appliances, foods, &c. are not a part of this "plan". In fact after you read this, you will have invested all that is necessary to try our this approach. (Of course the catch is that you have to follow through on the suggestions to see if it really works.) Here's how it works.

When a biochemist looks at the different fates of energy containing foodstuffs, he concludes that once consumed, the calories have to go somewhere. They can't be re-excreted. (Now granted you can binge and follow-up with a finger down the throat, or perhaps a bout with Exlax to hasten passage thus lessening absorption. But the fact of the matter is that once absorbed through the alimentary tract, you're stuck with the calories and nature is just going to apportion them as she sees fit.)

As example, let's take glucose (or fructose that stuff in high fructose corn syrup) used to sweeten that soft drink. Glucose can go through a process called glyco-genesis (which is nothing more that saying you're making glycogen from glucose) to put a small amount of the chemical in a warehouse for future (but essentially immediate use), sort of like "just in time" delivery of goods for manufacturing. Well, that's a dead-end street, because this is just a cycle of storage prior to usage so energy in, is essentially energy out - no gain (or loss).

How about putting the glucose to good use in manufacture of amino acids. Good idea, but you can only accommodate so much new synthesis, and to get any value here you have to have a pool of essential amino acids available to take advantage of the new ones formed. But, the result is in the right direction, you get growth (good idea if you're young and want to make the basketball team, or want the muscle mass necessary for football, or what ever.) This doesn't meet our goal of either weight gain or loss. So on to the next idea.

If the source of energy is in excess, the body will find a way to store it as body fat. Wait, that's not what we had in mind at all. Cancel that approach.

Maybe exercise is the ticket. But didn't I promise you that that wouldn't be necessary. After all that has been proposed countless times over the past decades with little benefit. After a while you just have shin splints, arthritis in the joints, bad knees and pulled ligaments, not to mention a heft bill for all the equipment and so forth. Nope that's not it, but it's close.

Exercise or work is a form of burning all that excess energy (calories) and if you stuck with it no doubt it would work. Few years ago (1930s), it was found that dinitrophenol would encourage the body to directly convert fat to heat, literally burning it up. Unfortunately, the dosage was just a wee bit less for fat burning than for stopping essential enzyme functions (it's called lethal dose) so when scientist and food fadist thought they had hit on the solution, it alas, was the final solution.

This suggestion is much simpler, no chemicals involved, and easy to carry out. Here's how it works. Knowing that the body burns calories to keep warm. You don't have to assume this; it's a fact. So we need a means of increasing the burn rate but not with the catastrophic results of the dinitrophenol fiasco. The answer was worked out back in the period of time prior to 1960 when we as a group discovered the comforts of central heat, insulation, polypropylene underwear, stocking hats, orlan sweaters and the like.

See where I'm coming from. What you have to do if you want to lose a few pounds is just turn down the thermostat. Don't dress quite so snugly. Leave off the feather comforter and the electric blanket. Now overnight, the body will adapt to this slightly different environment. Since staying at 98.6 is Mother Nature's idea of a perfect world, she will just turn up the body's thermostat to accommodate your changes. Net result is that within a day or so, you wont notice the difference, but your body will. Now some of those excess calories will go to keep the internal furnace going at a higher rate and of course off comes the pounds. Don't expect too much instant gratification. Nope, you will have to wait out the winter season to see if my approach works. But why not give it a try, all you have to lose is about ten pounds or so. And, a side benefit you will have helped this old world's environment along by not burning so much fossil fuels.

For those who want to gain rather than lose, just remember to dress warm as toast and again see if you don't benefit by maybe picking up those ten pounds your friend just lost.

Will this really work? Don't know. But it sure isn't as crazy or as high risk as some of the other stuff proposed by those who want to separate you from you money.
