The Suggestion Box: Ideas for Rules Changes

Last updated Nov. 11, 2005.

Shocking as it may seem, even the president isn't perfect. Well, neither is TFFL. That why each July, the commish sends out a ballot asking owners to vote on suggested changes to the rules book. Rules ideas can come from any owner, and any owner can submit as many suggestions as they like, and they'll all appear on the ballot. Owners are also encouraged to e-mail their arguments for or against ideas listed here, and those comments will be posted below each idea.

Any suggestion needs a majority vote to pass (6 votes in our current 11-team format). Here's what we have for 2006:

Suggestion: Make head-2-head matchups the tie-breaker in playoff seeding
Submitted by: The Jayhawks (Nov. 11, 2005)
Comments:
Currently, in the event of a tie at the end of Week 12, the team with the most overall points gets the higher seed in the playoffs. If they have the same overall points, the team winning the regular-season series between the two teams gets the higher seed. I propose we flip-flop the order of the tie-breaker rules, so that the team winning the head-2-head season series wins the tie-breaker. If we ever revert to teams playing each other twice in a season and they split that, we can make overall points the secondary tie-breaker.

Suggestion: Revert to "combined yardage" to figure yardage bonus
Submitted by: The Jayhawks (Oct. 22, 2005)
Comments:
If you recall, prior to this year's yardage bonus arrangement, we had a system that combined passing and rushing yardage for quarterbacks and rushing and receiving yards for running backs, wide receivers and tight ends. I think we should revert to that "combined yardage" format, but keep the current point rewards for our current yardage increments. Here's the current format:

Yardage Bonus
Passing Rushing Receiving
Amount Pts Amount Pts Amount Pts
First 200 yards 2 First 50 yards 1 First 50 yards 1
Each additional 50 yards 1 Each additional 25 yards 1 Each additional 25 yards 1

... and the proposed format:

Yardage Bonus
Quarterbacks
(Passing and rushing only)
Running backs, wide receivers and tight ends
(Rushing and receiving only)
Amount Pts Amount Pts
First 200 yards 2 First 50 yards 1
Each additional 50 yards 1 Each additional 25 yards 1

Here's the problem now: Chris Chambers gets 88 yards receiving in a game, totaling 2 points. Teammate Ronnie Brown gets 40 yards receiving and 48 yards rushing. Same yardage, but no points. The proposed change would obviously rectify this problem.
