Biography

Not every big league player comes with glowing credentials. In the June 1988 Draft, 1,389 players were taken before Mike was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 62nd round. Just five years later, the once unwanted catcher was the National League's Rookie of the Year. The classic "late bloomer," Mike grew up in suburban Philadelphia where he once received personal hitting instruction from none other than Hall of Famer Ted Williams. Mike must have listened intently because he's since become one of the most feared sluggers in the game.

Mike had another great season in 2000 as he led the Mets into the World Series. He hit 38 home runs, topping 30 for the sixth consecutive year, and racked up 113 RBIs to go along with a .324 batting average. It was Mike's eighth straight season with a .300 average, which is remarkable when you consider the physical demands of his position. He was also elected to play in his eighth All-Star Game, although he couldn't participate because of an injury.

Mike spent all or parts of seven seasons with the Dodgers before being traded to the Florida Marlins in 1998. Just a week later, the Marlins wheeled him to the Mets where he became once of the city's most engaging sports personalities. As affable as they come, Mike has made a tremendous impact in the community. He donates money to the Mets' "Takin' it to the Fields" program which improves and repairs youth baseball diamonds in the area.
