Biography

It would be hard to find a ballplayer who enjoys the game more than slammin' Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs. That's evident in the way he sprints out to right field before every game at Wrigley Field. The Bleacher Bums love him and for good reason. Sammy led the majors with 50 home runs in 2000, while knocking in 138 runs and batting a career-high .320. It was his third consecutive season with 50-or-more homers.

Sammy is a free swinger (he has struck out at least 168 times in each of the last four years), with explosive power to all fields. His home run duel with Mark McGwire in 1998 captured the attention of sports fans everywhere. They traded swat for swat on almost a daily basis until McGwire finished with 70 homers to Sammy's 66. McGwire won the battle, but it was Sammy who won the National League MVP and Outstanding NL Player awards that year after driving in a major league-high 158 runs. In 1999, Sammy blasted 63 homers, but McGwire hit 65 to again lead the majors. The two players have tremendous respect for one another and their battles are marked by friendship, not animosity or jealousy.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Sammy was raised in the baseball-mad city of San Pedro de Macoris. He created the Sammy Sosa Foundation in 1998 to raise funds for underprivileged children in both Chicago and the Dominican Republic. In 1999, the Foundation opened the Sammy Sosa Children's Medical Center for Preventive Medicine in San Pedro de Macoris. In 1999 he was recognized at the Players Choice Awards as Man of the Year.
