Biography

Shawn is the complete package of power, speed, hustle and smarts. He was one of only three National Leaguers to play all 162 games in 2000 (Neifi Perez and Luis Gonzalez were the others) and became just the seventh Dodger to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in the same season. Shawn hit two grand slams and drove in 99 runs, just missing out on his third consecutive 100-RBI season.

Shawn had some great years with the Toronto Blue Jays before coming home to Southern California after the 1999 season. He increased his home run and RBI total for three consecutive years, topping out in '99 when he hit 42 homers and drove in 123 runs to go with a career-best .309 batting average. He ranked among the American League leaders in nine of 15 offensive categories, including doubles (first with 45), runs (second with 134), homers (fifth), RBIs (sixth) and slugging percentage (fifth at .588). Shawn also won his first Gold Glove and had a 28-game hitting streak.

A first-round draft choice of the Blue Jays in 1991, Shawn passed on a baseball scholarship to Stanford to sign with Toronto. He made his Major League debut two years later, just in time to watch the Jays win their second consecutive World Series title.
