The 1st Marine Division Band was organized during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations in the early 1940's. Over the years, it has become an extremely versatile unit capable of performing in a multitude of settings, ranging from its primary mission as a ceremonial unit to other ensembles, such as the concert band, show band , jazz combo, dixieland band, rock band, and various other chamber ensembles.
Consisting of approximately 50 Marine musicians, the 1st Marine Division Band travels extensively throughout the western United States and has appeared in the Northeastern United States when participating in the National Victory Parade in Washington, D.C., and the Ticker Tape Parade in New York City. Other highlights include: numerous performances for Presidents of the United States, the 50th anniversary/rededication of the Golden Gate Bridge, a joint performance with the Soviet Naval Band, the Annual Tournement of Roses Parade, a tour of the island of Guadalcanal, a joint performance with the British Royal Marine Band commemorating the Chosin Reservoir and, most recently, performing in Salt Lake City, Utah, during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
In September of 1990, the band drew their rifles as they were deployed to Southwest Asia. During Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the band served as the security for the Commanding General of the 1st Marine Division. During Operation Desert Shield, the band also provided musical support as they performed during the Marine Corps Birthday and holiday seasons for all Marines deployed in Saudi Arabia. As the "Shield" gave way to the "Storm", they were brought forward and deployed throughout Saudi Arabia, and eventually Kuwait.
In February of 2003 the band once again drew their rifles and heavy machine guns as they were deployed to Kuwait for Operation Enduring Freedom, and crossing into Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. After once again successfully defending the Division's Main, the Band grabbed its instruments to provide "Moral Boosts" to the victorious front line troops before heading back to the states.
All Marine Corps Bands fulfill the purpose of preserving the values that comprise the unique and fundamental national strength and character of the United States. Whether performing on the march or in concert, the 1st Marine Division Band continues this tradition, and remains the "Pride of the Division".
