UPDATE 2nd August 2008 - Dragons '08

They think it's all over...it is now. The dance with the dragons has now drawn to a close, but what a trip it has been. Having now been to both Beijing and Shanghai, I have seen first hand the breakneck speed of China's economic growth. It has been made even more interesting as this is a time when the whole world has its eyes on the dragon as the Olympics draws closer. Dancing with Chinese Dragons!

Click to view my daily blog

School and A Levels are over and the summer has begun! Now I'm off to China to dance with the dragons!

Last year I chased the monsoon in India as part of my quest to conquer the BRICs economics (Brazil, Russia, India and China). This year it's the turn of the Chinese dragon!

This journey begins on 9th July starting in Dubai, after which I will travel to Beijing and Hong Kong with friends from 14th July, returning to Dear Old Blighty on 1st August. The aim of the journey is to experience first hand, the manifestion of China's phenomenal economic growth - not to mention having a lot of fun too! Throughout my travels I will be writing up a daily blog of what I get up to and will publish little nuggets of insights (yes Sara, 'Insights'!) that I manage to pick up along the way. Pictures will be up too (with many more on Facebook!). The blog can be accessed by clicking here or by clicking on the 'Dragons '08' button on the left. Here goes...

UPDATE March 2008
Finally, the dust has begun to settle after the first term of school and only now have I manged to get the 2008 blog page up!!

At the end of February, our Target 2.0 team put forward our presentation to keep rates on hold but did not manage to progress to the National Finals. However, we did win a well deserved Runners up place!

UPDATE 15th December: UK Rate Watch
As part of the Bank of England Target 2.0 competition that I am taking part in for my school, from now my blog will be called UK Rate Watch. I will now be publishing short daily blogs which will follow developments that affect the interest rate decision, followed by weekly summaries. This is available in the 2007c and 2008 (coming soon!) links. But I'll also include anything else interesting that I find in the papers!

In the Target 2.0 competition, the aim is to take on the role of Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which sets base rates for the UK economy. In order to set interest rates, it is important to look at a whole range of information from the domestic and international economy.

So welcome to UK Rate Watch!

UPDATE November 2007
For my 2007 blogs, I have split it up into three sections:

1) 2007c - September to December 2007
2) 2007b - Chasing the Monsoons (Economic Pilgrimage to India     blog - Summer 2007)
3) 2007a - January to July 2007

Chasing the Monsoons

An Economic Pilgrimage to India

This summer I went on a trip to the UAE and India to see for myself the economic development in both places. My plan for the trip and the Daily Blog of my experiences can be found at this link.

On return from this trip, I am in the process of writing three short articles, which will be available here once completed this summer:

1) India's Emerging Economy and its Sustainability
2) Impact of emigration from Kerala
3) Economic Developments in the UAE

----------------------------------------------------------

Economics helps me to understand the world around me in a better way.

Often when I listened to the news or read the papers, some stories, terms and phrases fascinated me and aroused my curiosity, but at the same time puzzled me a little as I did not fully comprehend their meaning. Slowly it dawned on me that these stories, terms and phrases related to a field of studies called Economics.

Around that time I came across an old GCSE Economics textbook. Eureka! (I did not run…instead, I read).

On another occasion, I was impressed by the way two of our senior sixth formers took on other competitors at a debating competition on minimum wages. The secret of our sixth formers was that they were both students of Economics.

I began to scan the odd textbook and read articles on current economic activities. This was not always easy. To help me understand better, I summarized some of the articles I read. The summaries I wrote are grouped and published here.

The intended audience for my summaries are my brother and my cousin (who both are reading economics at undergraduate level) and Papa. But as you have stumbled across these pages do enjoy my appreciation of matters of economic interest. I enjoy writing them.

My goal (after I have gained greater expertise and knowledge in the subject) is to start a daily economic blog.
