After
having written and read much about the BRIC thesis (Brazil, Russia,
India and China), I decided that I would investigate one of those
countries, India. I will travel to India and see for myself what
is happening there and read local research and discuss issues
with various academics I meet
I
will travel to India via Dubai where I will stay till 3rd July.
During the trip I will try to maintain a daily blog of what I
am doing and some personal reflections on what is going on. This
can be found on the 'Daily
Blog' link on the left hand side bar.
I
have split my trip into 3 main parts:
Part
I: UAE (29th June - 3rd July)
I
will broadly be looking at the economic development of the UAE and
also do some brief research on the impact of immigration on the
receiving country. My interest in immigration stems from reading
'Immigrants: Your Country Needs Them', where Philippe Legrain makes
a passionate argument about the benefits of immigration. I consequently
wrote an essay for the RES Young Economist of the Year, (which has
been shortlisted for the final): 'An Economic Analysis of Immigration:
in the context of immigration into the UK on EU enlargement'.
Part
II: India, Trivandrum (3rd July - 13th July)
My
aim is to carry out much research in
two areas. I want to look at:
1)
India's economic development: Past, present and its future sustainability
2) The impact of immigration on the sending country
We
have heard much about India's economic growth and it is predicted
by 2050, only India of the BRIC countries will have a growth rate
of over 5%. I will try to investigate whether this will happen and
see whether the Indian Elephant (not Tiger as David Smith argues
in his book 'The Dragon and the Elephant'!) can sustain its level
of growth.
Part
III: India, Bangalore and rest of Kerala travel (14th July - 1st
August)
After
having done my research I will travel to Bangalore to see for myself
the manifestation of economic development. Having written an article
about Indian outsourcing titled 'An Indian Takeaway', I want to
see one of the places which made this happen. I will then travel
down Kerala. By then, the monsoons would have finished!
