G-Love and Special Sauce
With their latest album, Philadelphonic, G Love and Special Sauce have once again proven to be one of the most innovative and relaxing bands of the recent years. After their three previous albums, Philadelphonic seems to be the crown on their work so far. But this certainly does not imply they are done by now. As we know from G Love and his band, they will continue to create a great diversity of songs, balancing between blues and hip hop, and folk and rock.
Pavement
For over ten years, Pavement have been surprising the international world of music with their unconventional style of making music. Starting with creating garage rock with a great focus on improvisation, they have developed to improve their music, while not losing the essential "Pavement elements" (folky rock, tempo changes, and critical and funny lyrics). Their latest album, Terror Twilight, is one of the most inspiring and best albums of last years, not in the least place because of the expressive voice of singer Stephen Malkmus.
Beastie Boys
Starting in the late eighties, the Beastie Boys were the first non black artists to enter the hip hop scene. With their powerfull rap, their groovin' songs, and their energetic live shows, they have managed to stay on top all these times. The B Boys have experimented along the way with different music styles, but they did not lose track of their core quality. The fans can be confident about the future; although all three have passed the age of thirty, one thing is obvious: They can't, they won't, and they don't stop.
The Roots
The Roots are unique in the hip hop scene. This 7-men group uses traditional instruments to create their "Organic Hip Hop Jazz". With one of the best beat-boxing artists in the world (Scratch), and their excellent implementation of the "old-style" instruments in their music, they are able to perform a fantastic live show. Together with, among others, Mos Def, Common, and good old Q-Tip, they take hip hop music one step higher.
