Desde hace un tiempo Spock está extrañamente inquieto. Después de una visita médica ordenada por Kirk, McCoy descubre que si Spock no regresa a Vulcano morirá en poco tiempo. Kirk: I owe him my life a dozen times over -isn't that worth a career? He's my friend.
