As a child Roddy was being taken by his dad to live with an old friend, as his mother had just died, and his farther had to go back to sea.

After they got to Langly, they stayed the night with Kate Makepeace. That evening the farther and son went for a walk, and stumbled across two men trying to bury a body. Roddy's dad tried to intervine and so they killed him. They also tried to kill Roddy, but he came round with no memery of what had happened.

He lived from then on with Kate. His two best mates were Hal Royston and Mary-Ellen Lee. He worked at the smelting mill, but his boss oculd see that Roddy was realy a taltented artist and showed the drawings to some friends of his.

Soon Roddy was leaving to learn more about his art, first to Mancester then to London.

His friend Mary Ellen had always been intrested in Roddy, and thought maybe he would change the way he felt about her if they made love. He eventually agreed, even though he didn't want to, and they did it just before roddy left for London.

Mary-Ellen ended up pregent with Roddy baby. She was made an outcasr by everyone including the family she was working for, and her own family. The only people who took her side were Hal and Kate. Eventually after the baby is born Mary-Ellen realises that it is Hal she realy loves, and so she marries him.

Roddy only finds out about the baby when he comes down for Kares funural. He then has to go back to London as he has a fiancee waiting for him. He doesn't see the child again before she is 24 yeara old.
