The role of “guitar player” is a potentially dangerous one.  It’s an EXTREMELY commonly played instrument, and is open for a serious amount of criticism.  Plus, guitar players almost always end up sounding like another person.  Which is really quite sad, but to be expected, as people tend to just latch on to a particular genre of music, and the players, in turn.

Thankfully, my own style is starting to present itself.  Mainly because I’m forcing it to present itself.

But hey, like any other player out there, I have my preferences when it comes to equipment, players, and recordings, etceteras.

Equipment

Styles

Players

A list of my current equipment follows.  (This is most likely going to be messed with this summer, so don’t expect a static list.)

  • Electric Guitar.  While most people put the brand name down, I can’t, because I built it myself.  It’s a guitar born of eBay.  But, it essentially is a Fender Stratocaster.  Dark blood red body, black pickguard, chrome hardware, three black single coil pickups.  This guitar is actually a surprisingly easy-playing guitar.  It sounds great, the action is good, and it’s not too heavy.  Not bad for under 300 clams spent.
  • Rogue Guitar Amp Head.  100 watts solid state, 12AX7 tube preamp for the distortion circuit.  Another “deal” I managed through the site www.musiciansfriend.com.  For 130 bucks, this is a very nice amp.
  • Guitar Speaker Cabinet.  Once again, no brand, because it was constructed by my father and I.  Modeled after a Fender Bandmaster speaker cabinet, with two 110 watt speakers in it.  I will eventually trade them up for Celestions.
  • Rogue Wah Pedal
  • Rogue Chorus Pedal
  • Currently also using an Alesis rack effect thingy, with some chorus, delay, and flange on it.  Not bad, but not mine.
  • Various cables and cords.
  • A whole slew of picks
  • A violin bow.  I like to think I’m Jimmy Page, every now and then.
  • Any decent string will do, really.  At least, as long as it’s not twelve dollars.

 Styles are listed NOW.

  • Rock (duh)
  • Metal, as of late
  • Alternative Rock
  • Sludge Rock
  • Math Rock (true math rock)
  • Classic Rock
  • Jazz (I like to think I can play jazz, anyway)

You need to hear these players, in order to really appreciate the full scope of the guitar.

  • Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, the man who taught everyone how to play
  • David Gilmour of Pink Floyd
  • Adam Jones of Tool
  • Joe Satriani
  • Leadbelly (Huddy Ledbetter)
  • Robert Fripp of King Crimson
  • Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins
  • Wes Montgomery
  • Stone Gossard and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam
  • George Harrison of the Beatles
  • John McLaughlin
  • Alex Lifeson of Rush
  • Stevie Ray Vaughn
  • Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave
  • Larry LaLonde of Primus
