| "THE HOT CORNER"---Miller's Take Like most Ranger fans I was happy when A-Rod came to Texas; unlike most fans I really didn't expect him to do more than he's done. I knew that without some decent pitching he wouldn't lead us to the World Series and I knew that if the Rangers weren't winning that he wouldn't be happy. His attitude really soured over the off-season---his dislike of manager Buck Showalter was made public--- and the Rangers brass really had no choice but to push for this deal as Rodriguez kept going to the press with his "desire to play for a winner". I think that I can speak for a great many fans of the Texas Rangers when I say that A-Rod never really became a fan favorite, the way Pudge or Raffy did...there was respect for his immense talent and the feeling that he was a genuinely good guy but he wasn't embraced by the public. Most of us feel that it really is time for him to move on and let team management get on with building a complete team instead of surrounding a "superstar" with spare parts. Baseball fans need look no further than the 2002 World Series Champs, the Anaheim Angels, to see the direction the Rangers should and will take: Cultivate young players, make shrewd trades, sprinkle in a few veteran free agents who are all willing to play for a smart, tough but fair manager. I don't expect the Rangers to complete the makeover before the start of the 2005 season but if you're a fan and you have patience it should be rewarded by then. |
