United Arab Emirates

Communications
Telecommunications in UAE are excellent. International Direct Dialing and full telex, telefax, and electronic mail and internet services are widely available. There is an efficient, reliable postal service. Commercial courier services are also widely used.

Electricity and Water
Electricity and water services are excellent and there are very few power cuts or water shortages. The electricity supply is 220/240 volts and 50 cycles. The socket type is the same as the three point British system. The tap water is heavily purified and safe to drink, but most people prefer the locally bottled mineral waters, of which there are several different brands available. Bottled water is usually served in hotels and restaurants but are widely available also in small shops, cafeteria or supermarkets.

Shopping
UAE has a number of excellent shopping malls and commercial complex and traditional souks. Dubai known as the City of Gold has one of the world's largest retail gold shops, which houses a variety of designs, which is again a feast to the eye of the visitors.

Road Transport
The government of Dubai has introduced a very well knit transport system, the Dubai Transport Corporation. Apart from local taxis with meter, they also operate inter-emirates buses. In addition to these services, private taxis are also available. It is advisable to fix the charges before hiring these private taxis. Apart from this, Dubai has small ferryboats known as "Abras", ferrying between the two parts of Dubai - Bur Dubai and Deira Dubai. Cruise operators are also available, who arrange short trips on the creek, which is an added attraction to tourists in Dubai.

Air Transport
Dubai has an excellent international air terminal, around 3 kms. From the city center. The National Airline, Emirates operates to various destinations around the world.

Photography
Normal tourist photography is acceptable, but like anywhere in the world, it's courteous to ask permission before photographing people. In general, photographs of government buildings, military installations, ports and airports should not be taken. There is a wide variety of films available and processing is usually cheap and fast with offers of having a photo album, film and enlargement of chosen picture to 8X10 size all for free, although the quality of reproduction can vary. Ultra violet filters for your camera may be advisable.

Tours and Sightseeing

There are many companies in Dubai offering a wide range of city or safari tours. The following list isn't exhaustive, but covers the most popular tours given by the main operators. The descriptions are intended only to give an idea of what's most commonly included.

Tours range from a half day city tour of Dubai to an overnight safari. which includes visiting the desert and mountains and camping out in tents. On a full day, evening or overnight tour, meals are generally provided, while on a half day city tour you will usually return in time for lunch. Check what's included when you book as there may be an extra charge for the meals. Generally, all tours include soft drinks and water as part of the package.

The Tour Operators' table lists the largest and most respectable companies operating out of Dubai. Each operator has their own style, so the content and general quality of a tour may differ from one company to another although the basic tour will be the same.

Many tour companies are part of larger travel and tourism organizations, so while a company may be quite young, it could be part of an organization that has been established for many years. Some of the newer and smaller companies actually offer a more personal, and sometimes more professional service, than some of the older and larger organizations. If you can, ask around for first hand experience of the various operators.

On most tours and safaris, there's a minimum requirement of four people for the tour to run. Larger companies may take couples or individuals if there's already a group booked that they can join. If you want a tour or car to yourself, you will probably have to pay for four people, even if there are less of you.

It's advisable to book a tour three or four days in advance, although in some cases less notice is not a problem. A deposit of up to 50% is normal, with the balance payable when you are collected. Cancellation usually means loss of the deposit, unless the appropriate notice is given. This differs from company to company.

On the day of the tour, collection is from your hotel, residence or common meeting point if you are a part of a larger group. Tours usually leave on time and no-shows do not get a refund, so don't be late! It's advisable to wear cool, comfortable clothing plus hats and sunglasses. Desert or mountain tours require strong and flat soled shoes if there is the possibility of walking. The temperature can drop surprisingly low in the desert after sunset, especially in winter, so it's important to take warm clothing. Other necessities include sun protection creams and a camera with spare films and batteries.

The desert safaris are a must for anyone who hasn't experienced dune driving before, especially good for friends and relatives visiting the emirates. Most companies have excellent safety records, but there is an element of risk driving in the dunes. Remember you are the client and if the driver is going too fast for your group, tell him to slow down. The driver should give the impression of being in full control of the car at all times, there shouldn't be any wheels leaving the ground.

Most companies will take an easier route if there are young children, the elderly or anybody who doesn't want to experience the most extreme dunes. Accidents have happened in the past, but with a good driver, you should have total confidence in his driving abilities after quite a short while, and you'll be in for a thrilling ride.
