Humor For Healing
John Shirn....wanted for corny jokes and stories inflicted on the public.
Proverbs 17: 22A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
I was a teenager during the great depression of the 1930's, and I guess our family was hit  about as hard as any during that period. My father was mostly out of work, lost his home to the Home Owner's Loan Corporation - a Federal Government  project designed to help people keep their homes - unless you missed a payment. We also suffered through the great flood of 1936 in Williamsport  PA when the home we lost was under six feet of water on the first floor. I could go on with many other hard times stories in our family, but I'd rather tell about the bright side, the happy days we enjoyed in spite of  the many hardships.
These happy days came to us through our radio when we would listen to different preachers and  received spiritual food to supplement the meager morsels on our table. Also enlightening were the comedians who brought much needed humor into our otherwise sad and difficult lives.
Among the favorites were Jack Benny, Fred Allen, Eddie Cantor, George Burns and Gracie Allen,Red Skelton, "Uncle" Miltie Berle, Amos and Andy,Lum and Abner, Fannie Brice as Baby Snooks, Judy Canova, Fibber McGee and Molly, Edgar Bergen, Sam Levine, Myron Cohen, and a host of others I cannot immediately recall.
It was their jokes, stories, and anecdotes that kept us laughing through it all, and that proved the above Proverb to be very true. I Wholeheartedly agree with Steve Allen, another top notch musician and comedian who said: ";When I'm sick, don't send me a doctor, send me a Comedian."; Actually, I prefer a preacher, a doctor, and a comedian. That way all points are covered. I really love to joke with my doctors and preachers.
I have always tried to share my pleasures with others and that is the reason for this web site. To bring some humor and some enlightening stories and anecdotes into the lives of those who are downhearted, up against hard times, and who might need a shot of humor rather than a shot of medicine - for humor makes a merry heart, and a merry heart is like a medicine.
You may recognize a lot of the following jokes and stories, very few are my own, but I believe they all belong to the ages. I will cite the authors when known, or sign ";unknown"; when not known. Otherwise, like "Uncle" Miltie always admitted - humorously -  "I stole them from the authors." I would rather say:  ";I borrowed them for your    pleasure."
