History of the MK2 Granada

Granada  : 1977 to 1985

Body Styles: 4 Door saloon, 5 door estate (station wagon)

Revised in 1982

Equipment improvements for the Ghia included Electric front and rear windows, and Air Conditioning.

September 1977 saw the release of the mark 2 with its more aerodynamic, yet squarer body-style, witnessing a move from the American looking MK1. Mechanically similar, however, with two new engines and revised spring rates and suspension geometry, improvements were made to the already superb ride and handling .

Tighter emission regulations saw the demise of the Essex V6 (although retained in the South African models) in favour of the more efficient German based Cologne V6's in 2300cc and 2800cc.

Weber carbs were now replaced by Pieburge twin venturi units and although more efficient, they have proven less reliable than the Weber units. In addition to which, Fuel injection became an option on the Ghia models and the rare 2.8 LSi. Ford chose the well-proven Bosch K-Jetronic system. Power output increased to 150bhp and later this went up to 160bhp in 1982

The MK2 reach its height when Ford introduced the exceptional Ghia X and Ghia X Executive

1982 brought with it a major revision to the Mk2 range, and the introduction of the superb Ghia X and by 84 the Ghia X Executive models.

Although retaining the original MK2 body shape, the revised models included new grills and bumpers and the introduction of the TRX metric wheels and Tyres on Injection model and improved handling.

Significant improvements to the already opulent interior included, Electrically adjustable seats (electrically heated on Ghia X with the Savoy cloth interior). Increased sound deadening material, Connolly leather and Savoy cloth covered door panels for the Ghia X and the benefit of a full  leather interior courtesy of Connolly Brothers of Wimbledon on Ghia X Executive

Ford 5 Speed transmission became standard throughout the range and a no cost option on the 2.8 and 2.8i models

Along with the revised exterior trim, post 82 models received a redesigned dashboard which now included a trip computer capable of  measuring average fuel consumption, estimated time of arrival and remaining fuel in tank to name just a few.

An overhead consul became standard on top line models allowing instant monitoring of all under bonnet fluids

Once again, a revision of spring rates and geometries made further improvement to the comfort and handling.

After the success of the MK1, Ford felt sure of the MK2. In its first incarnation, Ford introduced electric windows and a whole host of other feature never before scene on a car of its price, however; things were to change.

Vauxhall, seeing the market potential introduced the Carlton and the influx of cheap Japanese cars were soon to take a slice out of Fords cake, however, they fought back with the release of the series 2 Mk2 Granada. Described as one of the most opulent cars of the period, Ford crammed them full of goodies. Connolly Leather, headed seats, more power and better fuel economy, all went into making the MK2 Ghia X one of the most sort after Ford of its time. And to many, the peak of Fords success in the market.

Although I have covered the major models, Ford produced and number of variation, some of which appear to have been dealer specials. The 2.8LSi is a good example; it only appeared in the pre-facelift (series 1) MK2's and I have only been able to find reference to this model in the North East of England.

The first thing to note is that they are always white, came with a Recaro interior, TRX wheels and tyres, 5 speed manual box and a thicker anti-role bar up front and rear. Some have suggested that they may have been destined for the police, however, making it onto the civilian market instead. Although, I can say for sure the ones I have experienced are much faster than the stock 2.8 injection.

Other models have included the series 1 X pack cars which sometimes came with a leather Recaro interior and although similar in appearance to the LSi tend to have the standard 2.8i engine. Series 2 cars saw the demise of most specials however, many features found there way onto mainstream models.

During the 82 facelift, all models saw a revision of specs. The Ghia models gained more equipment; GL models gain the specs of the previous Ghia. L gained the GL spec and so-on down the range.

Top line honours were taken up with the Ghia X and later the Ghia X Executive. 2.8 injection models now came with the TRX wheels and Tyres, thicker front anti-role bar and a rear anti-role bar, all of which were originally only available to the Police.

The Mk2 eventually give rise the more aerodynamic Mk3, which later was re-badged as the Scorpio

South African models still included the 4200cc Straight Six and the 5000cc V8, However power was down on the MK1 although performance remand equal due to the lower weight of the MK2.
